Dear Friends:

We've got a lot of good info in this weeks' e-news. So I'll keep this brief and mention that last week marked the launch of three new programs:
  1. In partnership with Frazier Rehab, we launched the "Even Bigger" LSVT BIG Community Practice group on Wednesday nights at 7pm. Though this class is just about full, we are still taking names for the program, as we hope to start a second group after this pilot project is up and running.
  2. In partnership with Norton Audubon's Music Therapy Department, we launched a "Music and Wellness" music therapy group on Monday mornings at 9am. This class has openings; please email us ASAP if you'd like to participate in the mix of singing, breathing and music making!
  3. We started our "Sit, Stroll or Stride" walking and hiking club and went on two great walks: Anchorage Trail and Iroquois Park.
We are also tremendously pleased to announce that the Floyd County Support Group has officially affiliated with PSCKY! We look forward to expanding our services in Southern Indiana!

I'd also like to draw your attention to our calendar of events for this week; it is the first week we're literally offering a support event every day of the week! Now, that's exciting!

Wishing you well this week,

Jinn Fuller Renfro

Executive Director

MORE ON MOVEMENT & EXERCISE: MOVE BETTER WITH YOUR EYES SHUT? WITH CUES?
Our friends at NWPF shared an interesting article on a study that looked at sensory and perceptual issues and the role they may play in freezing. Basically, the patients performed specific exercises with their eyes closed to retrain their bodies in certain movement. One group in the study did the exercises with their eyes closed, and other group with open eyes. "The group that had done everything with their eyes closed was much better off," said researcher Quincy Almeida.

Other studies of interest look at how sensory cues (such as a rhythmic beat, auditory or visual cues) can be combined with exercise to improvement movementfor people with PD.

One such cue-based therapy is Interactive Metronome therapy. The IM program challenges you to synchronize a range of hand and foot exercises to a precise, computer-generated tone heard through headphones. Local person with PD Karen deGraaf has participated in IM therapy with local occupational therapist Laura Carnes Kane and said that it's very helpful. If you'd like to learn more about Interactive Metronome Therapy directly from Laura, please feel free to call her at 502-777-0809 or send her an e-mail.
