Dear Friends:

Today, we're not only celebrating the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but we are also celebrating the six month anniversary of our e-newsletter! Over the past months, the number of folks receiving our e-news has grown by 36%! If you know someone you think would like to receive our weekly news, you can use the "Forward Email" button at the bottom of each week's newsletter to share the newsletter with them (and they can easily use the "Subscribe" feature at the bottom of the newsletter to begin receiving it directly!). Thank you for helping us serve others and making sure that no one has to face Parkinson's disease alone!

"Everybody can be great. Because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve....You don't have to know the second theory of thermodynamics in physics to serve. You only need a heart full of grace.  A soul generated by love." Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our thoughts are with the families of Frank B. Hatfield, Sr. (who passed away Friday, January 8th) and Dr. Frederick K. Cressman (who died on Sunday, January 10th).

Research Participants Needed! The Division of Movement Disorders is conducting a study to determine if Coenzyme Q10 can slow the progression of early stage Parkinson's disease. There should be the presence of the three cardinal features of PD (rigidity, tremors, slowness of movement) but should not have developed sufficient disability to require treatment. If you are over 30 years of age and interested in this study, please call Annette Robinson 502-540-3585 for more information.

SCAM ALERTS
Through our membership in TRIAD (an organization that promotes the health and safety of seniors), and Louisville Metro's Crimes Against Seniors Unit, we learned last week of two scams currently active in the Louisville area. Be aware!
  1. The "Travelers" are active in Southern Indiana right now. Known for home-improvement scams, "Travelers" will often show up saying they have spare materials left over from a job in your neighborhood and can give you a great deal on similar work at your house..."Today Only!" Generally, the work is performed and then a much higher amount requested, with intimidation and threats if you don't pay up. Remember: there's no work that needs attention so desperately that you must ever succumb to "Today only!" and...if it sounds too good to be true...it generally is!
  2. There's been a resurgence of the "809 Area Code" scam. Targets receive an email or phone message asking them to call a number (often beginning with area code 809) to receive urgent news (about the injury of a loved one, etc.). This number is actually a pay-per-minute number, and unsuspecting folks are kept on the line as their phone charges mount up. Be aware!
