Dear Friends:

The Rev. Kelley Woggon (Chaplain, Norton Hospital) recently shared thoughts on "The Opportunity of Uncertainty" in Norton Healthcare's HealthMinistries Connection. As we weather difficult times and face the uncertainties that Parkinson's disease brings, perhaps these words will help lend a new and brighter perspective to your week.

"Uncertain times also can lead us to take a step back in our lives and take a good long look at our priorities and how we are living. More often than not, this look shows us it is time to make some changes. If we have to be more careful about how we spend our money, then what are the things that are most important and what can we simply do without? If our time is more precious, then what are the extra commitments to which we can begin to say 'No'? Often, what we find is there is much clutter in our lives that not only can we do without, but we are happier without."

SPECIAL LECTURE COMING!
Dr. MontgomeryOur friends at TEVA Neuroscience are coordinating a special lecture on Monday, January 25th. Dr. Erwin Montgomery with the Division of Movement Disorders at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, will be in town for one day only and will speak on "Managing Motor & Non-Motor Symptoms of PD."

Monday: January 25th at Meadowview Presbyterian Church
11:00am registration
11:30am presentation & lunch
12:15pm question & answer session

Please RSVP to David Green at 502-419-4350 as seating is limited. This event is being directly coordinated by TEVA; if you are on our monthly mailing list, you should receive an invitation by post.

Before joining UAB, Dr. Montgomery was the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the Roger Duvoisin Fellowship from the American Parkinson Disease Association and the Roland Mackay Award from the American Academy of Neurology. Additionally, he was elected to the American Neurological Association, a prestigious honor reserved for the neurologists who are most distinguished in the field.

Please note: PSCKY's regular "Lunch & Learn" at Meadowview Presbyterian on Wednesday, January 27th at noon will still be held. The topic is "Unraveling the Mysteries of Medicare."

NEW IN OUR LENDING LIBRARY!
LivingWe have a new DVD in our lending library this week: "Conscious Living/Conscious Dying". This 90-minute program with Stephen Levine explores living with illness, the process of dying, and the use of imagery in healing. As with all of our lending library materials, we are happy to send this directly to your home, or you can come by and take a look at our Open House this Friday, January 15th between 10a-2p.

"Treat your illness as though it were your only child, with that same mercy and loving-kindness. If it were your child's body, you'd caress it, you'd hold it, you'd do all you could to make it well. But somehow when it's in our own body we wall it off, we send hatred and anger into it. We treat ourselves with so little kindness, so little softness." Stephen Levine

You may also want to check our smaller listing of trials that we maintain on our website!
IN OUR COMMUNITY
Research Participants Needed! The Division of Movement Disorders is conducting a study to determine if Coenzyme Q10 can slow the progression of early stage Parkinson's disease. There should be the presence of the three cardinal features of PD (rigidity, tremors, slowness of movement) but should not have developed sufficient disability to require treatment. If you are over 30 years of age and interested in this study, please call Annette Robinson 502-540-3585 for more information.

Street Count Volunteers Needed: Every year the Coalition for the Homeless conducts a "street count" to compile a census of people who are living on the street. On Thursday, January 28, 2010, 6p.m.-8p.m., they will be doing the Street Count again. We will need lots of volunteers, even if it is just for an hour. They need people to help on the streets, to be inside to distribute clothing and sleeping bags, people to "direct traffic" inside the shelter, etc. Please reply to Susanne Binford, Seven Counties Project Coordinator, Mental Health Outreach at sbinford@sevencounties.org to sign up or for further information.

In our January printed "Monthly Support News", the listing for the Bardstown, KY group was incorrectly posted as meeting on the 13th. That group will meet on Wednesday, 20 January at 1pm. Our proof-reader must have had a bit too much eggnog!
