Dear Friends:

With the time change over the weekend, I've been pondering the phrase "fall back" (as in: Spring forward, Fall back). Thought I'd pass along this Chinese proverb:

"Failure is not falling down but refusing to get up."

So often, we focus on failure...the ways in which we think we may have failed; the ways in which our bodies may not be cooperating that day or this hour; the times when we feel tired or discouraged. Today, as we head into the "fall" season, I'm holding this proverb in my heart, and reminding myself (and you) that there's no failure in stumbling or falling, just so long as we keep getting back up! And I am carrying a feeling of gratitude into this week, as I think of the ways in which we can encourage one another and help each other as we each face our own challenges. What a blessing that we have each other!

Our congratulations to Karen deGraaf, a local person with Parkinson's who graduated the other week from the Parkinson's Disease Foundation's Clinical Research Learning Institute. Way to go, Karen! Jinn and Karen will be meeting this week to discuss how we can work together to engage people with Parkinson's in Kentucky and Southern Indiana in clinical trials.
DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON'S & OTHER CHRONIC ILLNESSES
Our friends with PDPlan4Life have just posted a Declaration of Independence to promote the interests and well-being of people with Parkinson's disease and other chronic illnesses by:
  • Asserting the equal status to which we are entitled and the quality care we deserve.
  • Empowering us to live well by preserving our independence and freedom as long as possible.
With their kind permission, we've included the text here. We encourage you to visit their site to leave your comments! You may also suggest changes to the Declaration at that site.

We hold these truths to be self evident, that all people--the temporarily healthy as well as the chronically ill--are created equal and endowed with certain unalienable rights, and that among these are:
  • The right to be recognized as "people", not "sufferers" or "victims," nor "subjects" in clinical trials. These labels diminish our power.
  • The right to be treated with compassion, dignity, and respect by all healthcare professionals at all times.
  • The right to choose our own doctors. Studies show that people who have good relationships with their doctors are most likely to attain optimal treatment rights.
  • The right to fully participate with our doctors in all decision-making affecting our health care. In order to make informed choices and achieve the best outcome possible, we must accept responsibility for learning about the potential benefits and risks of our treatment options.
  • The right to live out our days, for as long as possible, in our own homes with access to the services necessary to do so and without creating financial hardship for our families.
  • The right to equal access to quality care when and where we need it, regardless of our age, race, ethnicity, or income.
