Dear Friends:

Happy first day of autumn!

We sure hope to see you at this week's Lunch & Learn on Wednesday at Meadowview Presbyterian Church. Well-known disability rights activist Cass Irvin will be speaking, and we're looking forward to her wit and wisdom. (When I was speaking with Cass last week, she cracked me up with a version of this quote by James Branch Cabell: "The optimist proclaims that we live in the best of all possible worlds; and the pessimist fears this is true.")

We're also looking forward to our Monthly Open House on Friday from 10-2 at the PSCKY offices. This is a great chance for you to come by and check out our new resource materials, visit and trade ideas and information!

THINGS THAT WARMED OUR HEARTS THIS WEEK
Lemonade StandLee Ann Zoeller sent along this great picture of her children with grandmother (and PWP) Gayle Zoeller. These fabulous young volunteers raised money for PSCKY with their delicious home-made lemonade and raised awareness of Parkinson's Disease at the same time. Gayle relates that this is such a great way to do something with the grandkids while making a difference in our community, and we have to agree! If you'd like some PSCKY brochures to hand out at your own lemonade (or hot chocolate!) stand, let us know, and we'll send you a packet. Be sure to take some pictures to share!
ON-LINE LECTURE BY THERAPIST KEVIN LOCKETTE
Physical therapist Kevin Lockette shared this on-line lecture "Advanced Approaches to Improved Mobility for People with PD".This lecture was presented to APDA- St. Louis Chapter in August of 2009.  It covers an overview of Parkinson's Disease and focuses on movement strategies, techniques, exercise research, and much more.  The material presented is based on the MOVE IT project which is a recently released book and DVD.  There is more information available on:  www.parkinsonsmoveit.com.

Kevin adds: if you visit the link, you will find two files. The first one is a 300MB download of the lecture with Q&A and a run time of around 90 minutes. This file takes about 20 minutes to download. The second file is the full version (with run time around 105 minutes) and is HUGE (may take up to two hours to download). I recommend the first file!

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE LIVING WITH PD?
Question MarkWe've heard a lot of estimates about how many folks in the US are living with PD. 1 million. 1.5 million. 1 in every 300 people. 2-3% of the population. Are you ready for the TRUTH?

We don't know. And, because we don't know, it's harder to both study Parkinson's and reach out to help those who have Parkinson's.

The Parkinson's Action Network is asking people with Parkinson's to consider advocating for a nationwide Parkinson's disease registry. This bill, if passed, would develop and establish registries for Parkinson's and M.S. A registry "can be used to move science in promising directions for the therapies we so desperately need to ease the burden and find a cure for Parkinson's."

Read PAN's message about why you should care and why you should let your representatives in Washington know how you feel about creating a Parkinson's Disease Registry.
YOU'RE INVITED....
  1. The 2009 Southeastern Parkinson Disease Conference in Rome Georgia has EXTENDED the early registration reduced rate through September 25, 2009. The conference will be held in Rome, Georgia. Several people from our area will be attending.
  2. Jeannie Locy with Right at Home Senior Care has extended an invitation to visit their new Louisville offices at 221 Executive Park, Louisville KY 40207 for an Open House on Tuesday, September 22nd from 4-6pm. Learn more about their services, and have a chance at terrific door prizes too!
THINGS THAT MADE US LAUGH!
Smile EmoticonEmoticons are those funny little pictures of smiley faces, frowns, and the like that folks use in email to try to express emotion. Artist Dan Wade has made some "animated versions" of common emoticons using his own face acting out the emotions. While it has NOTHING to do with PD, this made us laugh, and so we're passing it along!
DON'T FORGET!

Monday, September 21st, 6:30pm: Shelbyville "Moving On" Exercise Group (Jewish Hospital Shelbyville Community Room (rear of hospital)).

Ms. Irvin will also touch on language and how it makes a difference in our perception of disability. Don't miss your chance to meet and hear this nationally acclaimed community organizer, writer, and disability rights activist! Bring your lunch; we'll bring drinks & desserts to share.
