Dear Friends:

OOOPS! Please know that there were a few small "goofs" in the September Patient Support newsletter calendars mailed out last week. Most notably: the Our Mother of Sorrows Support Group meets on Tuesday, September 15th and our PSCKY September Open House will be on Friday, September 25th. We'd be happy to mail you a corrected calendar for your refrigerator (email info@pscky.org to ask for one), or you can view the correct September calendar online.

If you do not want to receive this weekly newsletter, please unsubscribe using the links below. If you have news, ideas or suggestions, please feel free to email me at Support@pscky.org.
HELP US HELP OTHERS
There are many ways that you can help support the work of PSCKY in our community. PSCKY is a grass-roots organization. The majority of our funding comes from local support, and we are proud to offer our services to hundreds of families a month in Kentucky and Southern Indiana.

As we make our plans for expanded programs and services in 2010, we are asking our friends to help us in several ways:
  • If you have a connection to a company or organization that makes charitable contributions or supports non-profit organizations through sponsorships, please e-mail Jinn (Jinn@pscky.org). Right now, many companies are drawing up their 2010 budgets and plans and we'd like to share the good news about how how we're helping, and ask them to become our partners in fighting for a better life for people with PD. Please think about who you can introduce us to: your employer (or former employer), or companies that you support with your business and who are known for their support of good community causes.
  • If you have a connection to a religious or civic group, we'd like to know. In 2010, we want to visit churches, synagogues and civic groups to raise community awareness about Parkinson's; many people are living with undiagnosed Parkinson's or are living without the vital assistance and support that PSCKY provides. Additionally, many religious and civic groups are looking for new ways to give, through love-offerings, communion gifts, Christmas and Easter offerings and volunteer opportunities. We'd like you to introduce us. Email Jinn@pscky.org.
  • You can make a personal donation to support our programs and services. Gifts are tax-deductible and can be made on-line or mailed to PSCKY; 4912 US Hwy 42, Ste 105, Louisville KY 40222.
  • Consider remembering PSCKY in your will. This simple act creates a living legacy that helps others who are battling PD and helps us ensure that no one has to face Parkinson's disease alone.

LSVT "Loud" and LSVT "Big"
We were so glad to see so many folks turn out for last week's Brown Big Lunch & Learn on LSVT "Big" therapy for PD (and we promise we'll have more tables set up for September's Brown Bag!).

We have just received two DVDs on "The Science and Practice of Loud". These are available through our lending library. This DVD explains the basic concepts of LSVT "Loud" and "Big" therapies.

By next week, we should also have copies of the "Speech Exercises for Parkinson's" DVD available in our lending library. This DVD is NOT speech therapy - rather voice and speech exercises. It was designed for people to use as an adjunct to LSVT treatment delivered by an LSVT certified speech clinician, but it can also be used:
  • Prior to treatment as an introduction to LSVT-type voice and speech exercises
  • During treatment as a guidance for LSVT homework exercises
  • After treatment as a motivation to practice and keep the new loud voice for years to come.
You can request the loan of these new resources(or other books and DVDs) by:
  • sending us an email (info@pscky.org)
  • visiting our Monthly Open House (September 25th from 10a-2p)
  • asking Michele to bring the DVD or book to your support group (email support@pscky to let her know what you'd like to borrow)

  1. Patients Like Me is a cool place on the web where you can share your experiences, learn from others, and connect with patients just like you. 2. Do you like to take photographs? Guadiacare is sponsoring a juried photography exhibit on "The Beauty and Dignity of Aging." Why don't you enter!?
  3. We think you might like reading about this latest news of a PD patient treated with his own stem cells.
  4. Here's some interesting information about causes of weight loss in PD.
  5. Finally, as the 2010 US Census process begins, here's some information about Census Scams that is valuable for everyone to know! Basic rules of thumb to avoid all scams? If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! If someone wants your Social Security or bank account numbers, it's probably a scam.
