Historic Mineral Springs Spa Coming Back to Life

Early Member of NYSPA gets
New York State "Restore NY" Grant!

Dansville Castle

Dansville's famous Castle on the Hill has received a Restore New York Grant to bring the 1850's spa back to life.  Restore New York Communities Initiative was established by the state Legislature in the 2006-07 State Budget and is administered by the Empire State Development Corporation.  The Dansville historic landmark received $2.5 million dollars to supplement community in-kind and financial support, private monies, other grants and traditional lending resources, rounding out the project's Phase I projected cost of $6.3 million dollars.

Owner of the Castle on the Hill, Peter Krog, Krog Corporation of Orchard Park, and Dansville native, provided funding support for the first NYSPA symposium, which was held in Clifton Springs, NY, May 2005.  Dansville was one of the first historic mineral springs spas featured on the original NYSPA Spa-trail map.  Support from NYSPA through letters of support and by virtue of the Castle's position on the Spa-trail gave compelling evidence to the State and the Dansville community that re-vitalizing the Castle was a potentially significant economic driver and a resource for the health of the people utilizing this mineral springs resource.

James Caleb Jackson founded the Castle in 1858 and designed it to mimic the health spas of Europe, promoting the water treatments and nutritional guidance, emphasizing fruits, vegetables and unprocessed grain.  Jackson is credited with the invention of the first cold breakfast cereal, Granula!  This famous water cure was visited by noteworthy people such as Frederick Douglas, Susan B. Anthony, Horace Greeley and Clara Barton, who found the American Red Cross in Dansville, NY.  The Castle was in the hands of the Jackson family of physicians until 1914, when the family filed bankruptcy and it was used for a psychiatric hospital for returning World War I veterans.  In 1929 Bernarr MacFadden came to demonstrate and promote what was called "physical culture", offering a wide variety of exercise opportunities, various treatments and strict dietary guidelines, changing the name to the Physical Culture Hotel.  Our physical education within the school systems evolved from "physical culture"; Jack LaLanne was probably MacFadden's most famous protégés.

The vision for the re-vitalization of the Castle includes offices for conventional medical practitioners of primary care, sports medicine, pain management as well as services for and clinical training in acupuncture, chiropractic and massage.  The plan will provide employment for various construction personnel for at least two years. The finished facility will require building superintendent, grounds workers, housekeeping, receptionists, security, spa staff, office staff, mineral bath personnel and a number of practitioners such as reflexologist, aromatherapies, etc.  The project will draw people to Dansville and will have a lasting positive effect on the entire economy of the Dansville region.  This is the goal of NYSPA coming to life!

New York Spa Alliance (NYSPA) was formed to create awareness of and to provide support to New York State's vibrant and vital Spa Business community. Throughout the 19th Century, New York was a dominating center for Spas and related hospitality programs in the United States. Today, the New York Spa Business community is in the midst of a new resurgence and is creating significant economic growth for New York State in the areas of health, wellbeing and tourism. This resurgence is generating thousands of new jobs througout New York State and increasingly is a key element in the rejuvenation of rural, suburban and urban communities throughout the State.

The revitalization of the Castle is an example of the significance of the vision of the NYSPA founders and the power of a community of people to effect change in an industry.

NYSPA Joins Forces with "I Love NY" and the New York State Hospitality and Tourism Alliance

One of NYSPA's ongoing initiatives is to tie in with the State's "I Love NewYork" campaign, the official tourism program of the New York State Department of Economic Development. Recently, we have been asked to assist with the new I Love NY Web Site. With our help, spa businesses and spa topics will become a part of the state's very effective international public relations campaign.

NYSPA Works to Create Regional "SPA TRAILS"

Taking a page from the great success of the New York State Wine Industry and its very successful "Wine Trails", NYSPA is in the process of creating "SPA TRAILS" for each of the vacation Regions in New York State. The SPA TRAILS will be an important part of the NYSPA website (www.ny-spa.net) and will be special marketing engines available for all NYSPA members. The SPA TRAILS will be linked to the "I Love New York" website and will allow anyone who is interested in visiting one of the beautiful regions of New York to be able to immediately select a Spa or Spa Resort or Hotel they wish to visit.

The SPA TRAIL initiative is part of NYSPA's continuing drive to create greater awareness of the State's vital and vibrant spa community and to promote our members' businesses.
