I had the opportunity to speak at a retreat last Saturday - "Come to the Quiet". I was honored to share some of my story with 20 women who helped to shape my faith. The gathering consisted of women from St. Alphonsus Church in Mt. Pleasant Iowa, the church where I grew up.
First, I had the opportunity to thank them for modeling a life based on faith. During my young years I was not in a place of understanding. I could not have imagined their impact on me, which now as I grow I understand.
Their ages spanned from 51 to 91 and standing up in front of such a wise gathering of women was an honor. Me, just a baby at 41. Most had not seen me for 10 - 20 years. I have to admit, as I first stood in front of this group I might as well have been a naked baby just born. "What could I provide this wise group?" Well, we all learned a little something and I felt their love as if I were that new born baby. An embrace from Marilyn and a few proud glances from my mother supported me through a few teary moments.
For me, as I was enveloped by their wisdom I could no longer deny the true source of my fuel. For me I must affirm that it is the Holy Spirit of God that guides me today. That is what I must call it now, but each of us can call it what we want. The label is not important. The most important yet difficult thing, is simply to surrender yourself to a greater power that can be heard AS YOU COME TO THE QUIET.
The poem that I share today is the voice of my inner wisdom. It was not found in doing anything. It was found in being. Modern B*a*g Ladies' philosophy and mission is the outward expression of this poem. It was God's way of expressing my mission as the words effortlessly flowed from my hand onto the paper, quietly in the dark, one night several months ago.
Finally, in conclusion of the day the women wrote a personal note of inspiration that will be placed in a Believe Act Go Traveling Sanctuary pillowcase and delivered to women in a shelters. Thier words will bring quiet to other women.
