Nature Speaks to Us...

Fellow B*A*G Lady, Chris Heeter, founding director of The Wild Institute, shares the fuel that nature offers through simple, pure words in poetry.  I hope to share more of Chris's story in an upcoming issue.  Her newly released book is, Wild Thoughts, Just outside the window.

Encourage Giving.....

Liz is a co-worker. She is smart, articulate and thoughtful.  She is heading up the food shelf drive for our company.  Her invitation to  her family  Thanksgiving holiday included a request of their guests to share their blessings.  Prior to sharing in their bounty she had a Noisy Offering.  "Ask guests to bring change and throw into a pot or metal bowl.  You can shake the bowl to make it noisy or pass around the pot to collect the change."  $47 was collected and donated to the community food shelf.

Greetings!

It must be so exciting to be the life of the party, the one front and center, telling funny jokes, getting all the attention and the applause, it seems.  You know those types, famous or not, who naturally draw attention to themselves.  They're outwardly fun loving, entertaining and quick witted.

Me?  Well, I am certainly not describing myself.  As much as I believe that I want to be that person I have to accept the fact that, Carol Burnett, I am not. (Here's a little random side note:  variety shows of the past are what I consider real entertainment.  I loved the Carol Burnett Show.  That's what I call real fun.)  Me?  Well let's just say that the show couldn't go on without the stage hands, writers, producers, caterers etc.

Last Wednesday evening prior to hosting a house full of guests I was busy baking pies.  My hubby (life of the party) was rallying the early arrivals to a game of "Apples to Apples", not a complicated game.  I was making an honest effort to participate, but was distracted with slicing apples.  Since I was doing such a poor job of multi-tasking between work and play, I was dubbed the weekend's "Fun Hater".  The  nickname was dubbed in the spirit of FUN, but I was slightly offended and a little jealous that I wasn't the life of the party.

After much thought I announced to the "Fun Lover" who dubbed me as the "Fun Hater" that I must correct him. I am not the "Fun Hater"  I am the "Fun Enabler".  To which he replied, "Do you have to use such big words?"  Now that was funny!

Here is the lesson I must remind myself over and over again, "It takes all kinds to make this wonderful world go round, so I should spend more time embracing my strengths and less time fantasizing about being something I truly "B"elieve in my heart I am not." Besides, I don't have to be funny to be fun or have fun.  And sometimes I just need to lighten up a little.

Thank goodness B*A*G Ladies come with different talents and insights as demonstrated by Angela and her contribution of this weeks feature article. Thanks Angela.
Spread Joy. Shred Fear.
Have Fun. Be Funny. Enable Fun.

Have you ever noticed that certain songs create feelings, intensity, and strength that can break down the most ominous of walls of doubt? You genuinely feel like you could fly through any situation and any challenge. I believe that everyone should have a set of tracks or even a single song that sends them soaring into limitless dreams, goals, and aspirations, for me that song is "Believe" by Josh Groban. As I listen to this beautiful Christmas song (I want you to know that I listen to it year round), I'm that little girl that KNEW she was going to change the world. I feel the magic that allows me to create when the world is beating me down and shouting that I'm out of my mind for even trying. It's impossible for me not to smile when I listen to it and I do things that without it, I wouldn't have to courage to even try. Whenever I need to contact a big company or cold call, I start playing it over and over... Then suddenly I find that I've accomplished the impossible and feel like I can take on the world (often do). I've made that big sale, gave that speech, or helped that other person that needed to believe in something and in my line of work, people often can't do that on their own.

When the right music plays, I can envision my business, my life, even my car in the future. When those melodies are floating through the air, how can anyone not "Believe?" We can become those children that believed that anything was possible. As the song asks, "Where did those dreamers go?" Sometimes we need to find those dreamers, again and music is a wonderful way to start that search. We've spent so much time as grown ups that we've completely forgotten how to have that child-like ability to see beyond what is here and now. The only way to get beyond here and now is to see beyond that point and see the dreams of the future. They are our roadmaps and without them, we're lost.

As a business owner, I have the same challenges as everyone else and seeing people struggle through the holidays is difficult. The media constantly pounds us about the poor economy and some of us struggle with slower times during the holidays, but we have to believe in something and hope that it will improve. That alone is half the battle, understanding that it WILL improve. We've been in recessions before and rebounded from them. There have even been successful companies started during difficult financial times that have set this world on fire. Remember that the company we start at our kitchen table, today can create new jobs in the future. What we fight for now could change the world tomorrow.

These days we need hope and whatever it takes to send our hearts flying. Find that song or songs that makes you bounce across the room, soar above the clouds, and give you the inspiration to beat the odds. We can all find it, if we look... We can find that inspiration through music. Search out for the song that touches your heart and "Believe." Anything is possible and magic is real. We can do anything.
