FORMING HEALTHY HABITS

purple familyWith enough repetition, any activity can become a habit, so why not "program" yourself with a new habit or two?

Think of your new habit - walking two mornings a week or taking the Zumba class - as something you believe will enhance your life.

Then form a plan to make it a habit:

  • Lay the groundwork.  This has to be doable.  If you are going to Zumba after work, pack your work-out bag the night before.  Set yourself up for success.
  • Commit.  To make the activity a habit, you're going to have to repeat it.  You can start small - walking once a week, then twice, but you've got to establish the routine.
  • Give it time.  Research varies on how long it takes a habit to form - anywhere from 3 to 12 weeks.  But you want this to stick, so give your new habit time to become "automatic."
  • Reward yourself.  Your healthy habit will have its own rewards, but acknowledge your success in trying something new!
WELLNESS TESTING

Do you need a jump start to a healthier lifestyle?  Try these new wellness tests:

  • Fast Five Fit Check - A quick assessment to give members information regarding resting heart rate, blood pressure, BMI (Body Mass Index), and girth measurements.  FREE for all members.  Track your progress by having this monthly.
  • Body Composition - Body composition is determined by skin-fold analysis.  Testing is conducted by a YMCA certified fitness specialist.  $15.00; first session is FREE for members.
  • Cardio Fitness Testing - Aerobic capacity (VO2 max) testing is now available.  This involves walking or running on a treadmill.  Analysis of heart rate will be used to determine aerobic capacity.  This is an excellent tool to track progress. Testing is conducted by a certified YMCA fitness specialist.  $15.00; first session is FREE for members.
  • Complete Wellness Assessment - Great tool for setting short and long-term goals.  We determine your current fitness level and design a personal wellness program for you.  Detailed computerized information provides body composition analysis, cardio-respiratory status, muscular strength, flexibility, and health risk status.  A fitness specialist assists you in designing an exercise program based on your results.  Fee: $15.00.

The Welcome Center or Wellness Center staff will be glad to assist you in deciding which will meet your needs.  Click here to schedule a wellness assessment appointment.
