Some call it facelift in a bottle. I'm talking about Sculptra, a new volumizer to hit the world of facial plastic surgery. It's a non-invasive procedure which actually helps the body to create its own collagen. Unlike Botox that freezes the muscles, Sculptra helps restore volume.
What is Sculptra?
Sculptra is a synthetic injectable material known as
Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLA). PLA is a biocompatible (does not harm the body), biodegradable (able to be broken down by the body) material that has been widely used for many years in dissolved stitches, soft tissue implants, other types of implants, and in Europe since 1999 for cosmetic correction of scars and wrinkles. A natural form of PLA is produced in our muscles during exercise. Sculptra is not a filler, but rather a catalyst to cause your own tissue to grow.
What is Sculptra used for?
Sculptra is used for restoring volume and improving facial contours. Sculptra is injected to restore facial fullness and to restore nasolabial folds (smile lines), sunken cheeks, deep wrinkles or facial creases.
How does Sculptra work?
Sculptra works differently from other injectable products such as Botox, Collagen, Restylane, Juvederm, and Perlane. It is in a class of its own. With Sculptra, tiny particles of PLA are diluted in a suspension of sterile water. Then they are carefully implanted. When implanted into the tissue it works by irritating the tissue at a cellular level, thereby triggering fibroplastic activity, increasing the thickness of collagen in the area and adding volume over time. The PLA are then molded for optimal results.
Is there downtime following Sculptra treatments?
Sculptra treatment involves minimal downtime. Patients are generally able to resume their normal activities as soon as their treatments is complete, though some choose to wait for any swelling or redness to fade.
How soon will you see results?
Improvement in contour occurs gradually over two to six months, an advantage for those people wishing to avoid the obvious tell-tale overnight change in appearance of cosmetic surgery. Remember though that every patient is different and the tissue growth is dependent upon your own body so time for correction will vary.
How long will the results last?
Clinical studies have shown results last greater than two years! Touch ups may be needed to maintain the optimal results long term.
