the men and women who who have served or are currently serving in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Freedom is never easy, nor is it free. Many individuals have accepted the responsibility to preserve a way of life like no other on the face of this planet. Their contributions and sacrifices have been great, many have suffered and many have died. This memorial park will serve as a remembrance of the brave Americans who have fought to keep us free.

Since 2002, the City of Kingsland has embraced the concept of a Veterans Memorial Park. Over time, plans for the proposed park have been delayed or sidelined for one reason or another. Earlier this year, by action of the Mayor and Council, this project began to gain traction in moving ahead. A committee was formed to proceed with planning for the site. The committee has planned a two-phased project, with Phase I being enhancement, renaming, and dedication of the existing "City Park" located at West King Ave/Ga Highway 40 & South Orange Edwards as the Veterans Memorial Park. Phase II of the project will incorporate commemorative bricks honoring friends and loved ones. Residual funding from Phase I will be carried over for completion of Phase II of the project. Development of the site will be completed funded through donations and contributions.

Mr. David Amos, an architect from St. Simons Island, became excited after learning about the project and offered his services to the committee. He has graciously volunteered his architectural services in preparing a concept design for the entire park project, at no cost to the City. Mr. Amos has a professional services contract with the City for architectural services and has also performed work for the Camden County PSA, including the new design for Lion's Park here in Kingsland.

Mr. Jerry Holcomb, Kingsland's consulting arborist, has agreed to work with the committee on the preparation of a landscaping design. The landscaping is envisioned to reflect and complement the colors in the flag.

The City has expressed and received overwhelming support from many individuals and groups in the community for this project. The City's Public Works Department will undertake construction of the project. Phase I of the project is scheduled to be dedicated on Veterans Day, Thursday, November 11, 2010.  Activities for that day begin at 10:00am with the VFW Post 8385 sponsored Annual Veterans Day Parade.  At 11:00am, immediately following the parade, a park dedication ceremony will take place on site and then the City of Kingsland will be serving a taste of southern fried catfish and grits sponsored by the Labor Day Catfish Festival Committee.  To participate in the parade, please complete & return a parade application.

Contributions for the project construction are now being accepted and all contributions and donations are tax deductible through the Kingsland DDA's 501(c)(3) Foundation.  Your financial donations will help us construct the Veterans Memorial Park in Kingsland, Georgia to commemorate and honor our heroes.  To make a donation, please complete and return this form to the City of Kingsland.  For more information, please call (912) 729-5613.
