Dear ,

The most important day in the Jewish religious calendar is Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16). Even though the sacrificial system came to an end with the destruction of the temple in A. D. 70, it remains the highest holy day in Judaism.

On the day of Atonement the high priest entered the Holy of Holies in the tabernacle of the wilderness, and later the temple in Jerusalem, to make atonement for the sins of the people of Israel.

The word atonement means, "to cover" the sin, and thus to "wipe out," "to erase," "to cover." In doing so the sacrifice "removed" the guilt of man's sin before God. The removal of the sin accomplished reconciliation between men and God. Perhaps this is why the Jewish rabbis called it the "Day," or the "Great Day."

Only one day of the year could the high priest enter into the Most Holy place and meet with God before the mercy seat. Only on the Day of Atonement could the representative of the people enter into this most solemn meeting place between God and man. It was only with the sacrificial blood of the animal substitute that He could enter on behalf of the people and himself.

In Christ, God provided the sacrifice that settles our debt once for all. The sacrifice of Jesus Christ secured our "eternal redemption." What the imperfect sacrifice of animals could not do, Jesus Christ did once and for all for all who will believe on Him. No longer do we have to depend upon the temple priest to enter the Holy of Holies once a year to make atonement for our transgressions. His Grace is available to all who seek, twenty-four hours a day, every day of the year.

Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are-yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God's throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. Hebrews 4:14-16

Next Wednesday, Yom Kippur, pause and give thanks for God's substitutionary sacrifice and ask for His guidance to share the Good News.

Blessings,

Steve

Some Parting Fun....

One day a mailman was greeted by a boy and a huge dog.

The mailman said to the boy, "does your dog bite?"

"No," replied the boy.

Just then the huge dog bit the mailman. The man yelled, "I thought your dog doesn't bite!"

"He doesn't," replied the boy, "that's not my dog!"
