                  | | Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter |
 | Dear ,      2 Corinthians 13:5 - Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you-unless, of course, you fail. (NIV)   "Anything worth doing is worth doing right" is a saying that you've most likely grown up with. I know that my parents and grandparents would often remind me of this when I would be tempted to give something less of myself than the task at hand deserved. Living a Christian life is definitely something worth doing; so, it is wise that we do our best to make sure we do it right.
How then, do we know if we are doing it right? For most any endeavor, the best way to determine how we are doing is to examine our performance.   For example, a professional athlete will scrutinize every aspect of his or her game and work tirelessly to improve on any weakness. An accomplished pianist will practice for hours and hours to get just several measures of music exact and work until their performance is as natural as taking a walk. As Christians, it is important that we examine ourselves to make sure we are living a live that will bring honor to our Lord. There are some important things to note when examining one's self:
The Christian life is a life of balance.
If you find nothing wrong with yourself, there's something wrong with you.
Self-examination must result in action. No man looks in the mirror, sees a speck in his eye and leaves it there.
Daily reflection is a necessity - it is fairly easy to remember the past several hours and work toward making corrections. Attempting to remember the events of a day several weeks later is next to impossible.
In the 1700's, Jonathan Edwards put together a list of 70 strict rules he would try to live by. The list is known today as "The resolutions of Jonathan Edwards." A great number of them were essentially reminders of self-examination. Here are just a few examples:   24. Resolved, whenever I do any conspicuously evil action, to trace it back, till I come to the original cause; and then, both carefully endeavor to do so no more, and to fight and pray with all my might against the original of it.     25. Resolved, to examine carefully, and constantly, what that one thing in me is which causes me in the least to doubt of the love of God; and to direct all my forces against it.    27. Resolved, never willfully to omit any thing except the omission be for the glory of God; and frequently to examine my omissions.  30. Resolved, to strive to my utmost every week to be brought higher in religion, and to a higher exercise of grace, than I was the week before.
 37. Resolved, to inquire every night, as I am going to bed, wherein I have been negligent,- what sin I have committed,-and wherein I have denied myself;-also at the end of every week, month and year.

 47. Resolved, to endeavor, to my utmost, to deny whatever is not most agreeable to a good, and universally sweet and benevolent, quiet, peaceable, contented and easy, compassionate and generous, humble and meek, submissive and obliging, diligent and industrious, charitable and even, patient, moderate, forgiving and sincere temper; and to do at all times, what such a temper would lead me to; and to examine strictly, at the end of every week, whether I have done so.

 60. Resolved, whenever my feelings begin to appear in the least out of order, when I am conscious of the least uneasiness within, or the least irregularity without, I will then subject myself to the strictest examination.

 | Don't Waste Your Life!
 | |
John Piper writes, "I will tell you what a tragedy is. | | | In Store or On-Line |
I will show you how to waste your life. Consider this story from the Reader's Digest: A couple 'took early retirement from their jobs in the Northeast five years ago when he was 59 and she was 51. Now they live in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they cruise on their 30-foot trawler, play softball and collect shells. . . .' Picture them before Christ at the great day of judgment: 'Look, Lord. See my shells.' That is a tragedy.   "God created us to live with a single passion: to joyfully display his supreme excellence in all the spheres of life. The wasted life is the life without this passion. God calls us to pray and think and dream and plan and work not to be made much of, but to make much of him in every part of our lives."   Most people slip by in life without a passion for God, spending their lives on trivial diversions, living for comfort and pleasure, and perhaps trying to avoid sin. This book will warn you not to get caught up in a life that counts for nothing. It will challenge you to live and die boasting in the cross of Christ and making the glory of God your singular passion. If you believe that to live is Christ and to die is gain, read this book, learn to live for Christ, and don't waste your life!

 | Some Parting Fun....  | | A minister waited in line to have his car filled with gas just before a long holiday weekend.
The attendant worked quickly, but there were many cars ahead of him in front of the service station. Finally, the attendant motioned him toward a vacant pump.

"Preacher," said the young man, "I'm sorry about the delay. It seems as if everyone waits until the last minute to get ready for a long trip."

The minister chuckled, "I know what you mean. It's the same in my business."
