Dear ,
PROCLAIM LIBERTY THROUGHOUT ALL THE LAND UNTO ALL THE INHABITANTS THEREOF LEV. XXV. V X. (inscription on the Liberty Bell)
Do you remember the Keep America Beautiful television commercials several years ago that depicted a Native American witnessing the disregard of America's nature and beauty? He was moved to tears over the apathy shown toward stewardship of our once pristine environment.
I wonder if our nation's founding fathers would be moved to tears as well over the apparent apathy shown by Christians in our nation today toward the principles and ideals embraced in the foundation of our great republic. As a people, we seem to have lost sight of Thomas Jefferson's observation that no free government can long exist without moral and virtuous citizens as it seems our country continues to turn away from Godly wisdom and precepts.
Our founders were men of great courage and faith, many of the signers of the Declaration of Independence were Bible scholars. It is the same Congress that formed the American Bible Society. Immediately after creating the Declaration of Independence, the Continental Congress voted to purchase and import 20,000 copies of scripture for the people of this nation.
James Madison, the primary author of the Constitution of the United States, said this: 'We have staked the whole future of our new nation not upon the power of government; far from it. We have staked the future of all our political constitutions upon the capacity of each of ourselves to govern ourselves according to the moral principles of the Ten Commandments."
It is well known that if placed into a pot of boiling water a frog will jump out, but if placed into a pot of water that is slowly heated to boiling the frog will perish. Could a similar fate be facing America today? Have we allowed ourselves to slowly become so accustomed to immoral, unethical, and un-principled behavior that we no longer even recognize the danger? Have we allowed our elected officials to alter the course of our nation without voicing an opinion, or faithfully praying that God would continue to give them Divine Providence?
In 2004, Ronald Reagan noted "...without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure. If we ever forget that we're one nation under God, then we will be a nation gone under."
This Independence Day, take some time to reflect on the guiding principles and intended government desired and penned by our Godly founders. Pray for our great nation and ask God for guidance on what you can do to make a difference in maintaining our Christian heritage.
Blessings,
