Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter

Dear ,

During a recent conversation with a friend the discussion turned to the state of the church in America today.   We lamented at the apparent lack of respect for the practice of quiet reflection and reverence in the sanctuary, and at the ever increasing apathy in general toward living a dedicated life of Christian faith.

Thinking more about that conversation this week has led me to the realization that the root of the problem is more than likely being caused by a modern day opinion of what it means to be a Christian. Doing some research on this revealed the following statistics provided through studies by the Pew Foundation and Barna Research Group.

While most Americans, 84%, identify themselves as Christian, only 40% attend church on any given Sunday. Of those who do attend church, 52% consider religion to be very important in their lives, leaving 48% to consider it either somewhat, or not important at all. Even more disturbing is a finding that only 40% of those professing to be Christians believe that Jesus is the only way to eternal life while 57% believe that there are many ways for one to enter heaven. Another finding was that only 38% of those claiming to be Christian believe that the Bible is the inspired Word of God while most believe that it was only a book written by men.

These survey results indicate that the lack of spiritual fire in our churches is due to a lack of spiritual fire in those professing to be Christians. Barna attributes the dismal findings to the fact that many ask for God's forgiveness but few are willing to suffer and sacrifice in order to be broken of sin and move on to a life of surrender and submission that produces a deeper relationship with God, and a genuine love for other people. He continues to explain that Bonhoeffer's description of such a spiritual condition, the pursuit of cheap grace, seems to fit America all too snuggly today.

We desperately need to see a spiritual awakening in our country that would move the hearts of Christians to live as Christ followers rather than just professing to be one. Our great nation has experienced several awakenings in it's 236 years, and with the persistent prayers and petitions from true believers to the Throne of Grace for another revival in our land, I believe that a revival can and will happen again.

If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.

- 2 Chronicles 7:14 (AMP)

Implosion: Can America Recover

Implosion
In Store or On Line

Bestselling author and international political expert Joel C. Rosenberg tackles the question: Is America an empire in decline or a nation poised for a historic Renaissance?

America teeters on a precipice. In the midst of financial turmoil, political uncertainty, declining morality, the constant threat of natural disasters, and myriad other daunting challenges, many wonder what the future holds for this once-great nation. Will history's greatest democracy stage a miraculous comeback, returning to the forefront of the world's economic and spiritual stage? Can America's religious past be repeated today with a third Great Awakening? Or will the rise of China, Russia, and other nations, coupled with the US's internal struggles, send her into a decline from which there can be no return?

Implosion helps readers understand the economic, social, and spiritual challenges facing the United States in the 21st century, through the lens of biblical prophecy.

BONHOEFFER

From the "New York Times" bestselling author of "Amazing Grace," a groundbreaking biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, one of the greatest heroes of the twentieth century, the man who stood up to Hitler.

A definitive, deeply moving narrative, Bonhoeffer is a story of moral courage in the face of the monstrous evil that was Nazism.

After discovering the fire of true faith in a Harlem church, Bonhoeffer returned to Germany and became one of the first to speak out against Hitler. As a double-agent, he joined the plot to assassinate the Fuhrer, and was hanged in Flossenberg concentration camp at age 39. Since his death, Bonhoeffer has grown to be one of the most fascinating, complex figures of the 20th century.

"Bonhoeffer" presents a profoundly orthodox Christian theologian whose faith led him to boldly confront the greatest evil of the 20th century, and uncovers never-before-revealed facts, including the story of his passionate romance.

A Father's Day Poem
What Makes a Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,

The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle's flight,

The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,

Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it ... Dad

Some Parting Fun....
One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her small boy into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?"

The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't, dear," she said. "I have to sleep with Daddy."

A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice: "The big sissy."
