Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter

Dear ,

This Sunday, June 3,  we celebrate Trinity Sunday.

Trinity Sunday celebrates the Christian understanding of the Trinity, the three Persons of God: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Perhaps the most difficult of all Christian dogma to understand; the Trinity is a mystery that is beyond complete human understanding.   How is it that one person can be three distinct entities, yet one?

We do have some concepts in our earthly experience that may help.   While not exactly the same, let's consider water.   A water molecule can be liquid, vapor, or solid but it remains water. Or, think about having two distinct eyes, a left eye and a right eye that together produce one vision.   We could also use the example of a musical chord made up of three distinct notes, C, E, and G - a c-chord. Together they sound full and beautiful, but leave one note out and the chord is missing something.   On another note, we could think of ourselves as different persons when we consider our relationships. For example, I am one person but I am a father, a brother, a grandfather, an uncle, a son and a husband.   None of these examples explains the mystery of the Trinity, but at least they help me grasp the concept a bit.

In honor of the three distinct persons of the Trinity, the Nicene Creed is our way of expressing our faith and belief in the mystery.   Developed from scripture, prayer, and tradition, the creed helps us understand the complexity of God who can be one yet three, providing exactly what we need through each Person to live our lives so that we may bring Glory to him.

The creed, first constructed at the Council of Nicaea in 325 BC, was a direct response to the teaching of Arius, a Libyan theologian who stated that Jesus, while a creation of God, was not God. In 381 BC a second council, the Council of Constantinople, completed the creed with additional affirmation as to the person of the Holy Spirit.

Prayerfully recite the Nicene Creed this week, as believers have done for centuries, and reflect upon the mystery of God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

We believe in one God,  the Father, the Almighty,  maker of heaven and earth,  of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.  For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic* and apostolic Church.  We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.  We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

Blessings,

Steve

For some of us being a Christian is harder than it should be. Discouraged, anxious, worn down, we wonder what happened to the power and the joy that Jesus promised.

Jim Cymbala believes that many of us are missing something vital. Christianity, he says, for even the best-intentioned person or church, is impossible without the Holy Spirit. You can have regular devotions, great preaching, a strong emphasis on the Bible, a great worship team, and a congregation that is trying, but if you aren't vitally in touch with God's Spirit, you are missing out on the life God has for you. The Holy Spirit, he points out, is God's agent on earth. Yet he is the least understood, least preached about, and least discussed member of the Trinity.

With stunning stories of how God is working in the lives of people and churches today and biblical teaching about the Holy Spirit, Jim Cymbala invites you to experience God in a fresh and vital way. Nothing else will change our prayer life, our study of God's word, and our worship more than opening our hearts to the Spirit. If we want power, confidence, joy, peace, and more love in our lives, then we need a better understanding of how and why the Spirit moves so we can join him there.

In Catch of the Day, Jimmy Houston combines both his love of fishing and his love of God in this unique fisherman's 365-day devotional. Each day features a scripture and a thought for meditation that applies insights from the art of fishing to daily spiritual growth, as well as a fishing tip from a pro.

Anyone who loves God's creation, combined with the excitement of the catch, will truly enjoy this guide of spiritual lessons for life.

Some Parting Fun....
"I hope you didn't take it personally, Reverend," an embarrassed woman said after a church service,  "when my husband walked out during your sermon."

"I did find it rather disconcerting," the preacher replied.

"It's not a reflection on you, sir,"  insisted the church goer.
"Ralph has been walking in his sleep ever since he was a child."
