Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter

Dear ,

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."  A second time he said to him, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord; you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."  He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, "Do you love me?" And he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." Jesus said to him, "Feed my sheep.   John 21:15-17 (RSV)

Sometime after the resurrection, Jesus appears on the shore and invites the disciples to breakfast.  Think for a minute about Peter, the disciple who had denied Christ on the night of his arrest. A denial that came after Peter had promised his unwavering support even unto death.  Think about how he must have felt as they gathered around the fire to share the meal.  Do you think he made eye contact with Jesus?  Do you think he tried to shy away from the Lord as much as possible?   I imagine that Peter was more than a bit uncomfortable as he wondered what Jesus would say.

But with Grace, Jesus simply asks Peter, "Do you love me".  And Peter, knowing full well the degree of devotion Jesus is asking with each question, answers honestly, Lord, you know that I love you."  Peter didn't try to hide the fact that he wasn't capable of loving Jesus in the way Jesus was asking; but Jesus accepts his love, and even more, entrusts Peter to feed His sheep.

Too often, I fear, I too have denied Him after promising to serve Him.  Many times I too have fallen far short of giving Jesus the love and support he deserves.  Still, Jesus simply asks, "Do you love me?" and I humbly reply, "Lord you know I love you."  I know that in our own strength we are unable to serve and love in the way that our Lord deserves.

Thank God, we serve a savior who knows our every weakness and loves us as we are, ready to redeem us whenever we fall short.  It doesn't matter what your past may hold.  It doesn't matter if there have been failed relationships, failed promises, failed projects or broken dreams.  Jesus is ready to restore, redeem, and fellowship with you, just as He did with Peter.

Jesus is asking, "Do you love me?"

What is your response?

Blessings,

Steve

What's So Amazing About Grace?
Mention the word "grace" and what immediately comes to mind for most of us is a bagpipe wailing the solemn notes of "Amazing Grace."
What's So Amazing About Grace
In Store or On Line

The grace of which Philip Yancey writes is the freely given and unmerited favor and love of God. This grace seems a remote, almost sentimental concept, without a place in our lives or our society. It is a vague, slippery thing to us, probably because we seem to experience grace so rarely and have managed to leech the word of meaning. But Philip Yancey has set about to rescue grace in his book What's So Amazing About Grace?

This grace is the true message of Jesus. All faiths have virtues and creeds and justice and truth, but Jesus speaks merely of receiving the love that God has for us. Accepting it, not earning it or making ourselves worthy of it. And frankly, accepting something we have not earned or are not worthy of is not an easy thing for most of us.

In truth, grace is both utterly simple and utterly confounding. Little by little, Yancey guides us into a clearer understanding of grace by using stories, in much the same way Jesus did. We read stories of both grace and ungrace at work in people's lives. Sadly, it is stories of ungrace that are more prevalent today, the current culture wars painful acknowledgments of ungrace in our lives as Christians in this country. Yancey helps us understand that ungrace is that state of being in which self-righteousness and pride are a result of thinking that we have somehow earned God's approval and may now stand in judgment in his behalf.

Topics include modesty, purity, self-esteem, handling emotions, witnessing, living the faith.

Why Jesus?
Why Jesus?
In Store or On Line
The author believes that over the past forty years movements like New Age spirituality and society's obsession with human potential have combined like a "perfect storm" to redefine for popular culture what has been for centuries the classic biblical definition of the person, work, and teaching of Jesus Christ.

In WHY JESUS?, Ravi Zacharias looks at the impact of this "storm" by discussing the 60s-70s "Age of Aquarius," actor Shirley MacLaine's book and TV series Out On a Limb, author James Redfield (The Celestine Prophecy), Rhonda Byrne (The Secret), Dan Brown (The Da Vinci Code), and other books by Eckart Tolle, Wayne Dyer, Deepak Chopra, the Dalai Lama, and Marianne Williamson. Special attention will be given to the influence of Oprah Winfrey's media platform in reshaping society by introducing and promoting certain books and authors.

Major new age and human potential tenets will be discussed like: the belief that we are all gods and have to discover our divinity; Jesus was only a good teacher; Christianity is but one among many ways to eternal life; reincarnation is real; Jesus was married; truth is relative; there is no sin; and perfection is possible.

The truth of and the arguments for the bodily resurrection of Jesus will be presented as the most important argument for the exclusive claims about Jesus and Christianity.

Some Parting Fun....

After hearing a Bible lesson in Sunday school about miracles, a little girl went up to her Sunday school teacher.

"In my house," said the little girl, "when handwriting appears on the wall it's not a miracle, it's the work of my little brother."
