Dear ,
After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Matthew 17:1-2
Jesus had finished explaining to the disciples of the things to come; how he would suffer at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he would be killed. Can you imagine the depth of their despair when they heard the master speaking like this to them?
And even more, he told them that if they were to be his disciples that they must deny themselves, pick up their cross and follow him! Despair took a turn for the worse - depression, fear, anxiety, and doubt come to my mind. When's the next train out of town, I think I need to be on it!
But then, rather than leaving them in the dust to pick up the pieces of lost hopes and dreams, Jesus continues..
For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul? For the Son of Man is going to come in his Father's glory with his angels, and then he will reward each person according to what they have done. "Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."
And then he takes Peter, James and John to the mountaintop for an up close and personal view of God's glory. Wow!
Doesn't he expect the same from us today? Pick up your cross and follow me isn't a suggestion. It could be hard, it will most definitely demand sacrifice, it may even cost your life, but there is a mountaintop event ahead for all who will.
Blessings,
<><

In the New Testament Gospel of Mark, we meet Jesus, the man who is King. But this king comes to serve--not to be served. He eats with sinners rather than royalty. His crown is made of thorns instead of gold. This study guide introduces you to the compassionate, suffering, astonishing king who calls us to follow him.
This guide offers you the opportunity to learn through the eyes of Mark more about Jesus and the life he calls each of us to. It consists of twenty forty-five minute studies, with the option of two review studies that tie together major themes.

Some Parting Fun....
| My grandson was visiting one day when he asked,
"Grandma, do you know how you and God are alike?"
I mentally polished my halo while I asked, "No, how are we alike?"
"You're both old," he replied. |
