Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter

Dear ,

"In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.  Mark 1:9-14

The first Sunday of Lent we focus and reflect upon the baptism and temptation of Christ.   Notice the sequence of events in the Gospel passage?  He was baptized, filled with the Spirit, then tempted by Satan.   He embraced His ministry, and when tempted, rejected the deceiver Satan.

How do we relate this to our lives?  As Christians we have been baptized into the family of God and as such, into His ministry. Do we proclaim to the world who we are through our baptism or do we hide, afraid that others may find out that we are one of those Christ followers?  Have we embraced our ministry?   Can our families, friends, and even passing acquaintances easily tell by our words and deeds that we are Christians?

In the wilderness it can be easy to think that it doesn't matter, no one is watching, no one will know.   It is very tempting sometimes to take what appears to be the easy way out, to give in to our fleshly desires rather than trust in the Spirit.  When the tempter comes we need to rely on the Spirit to give us the strength necessary to overcome.  Do we look to Christ as our example and follow his lead, trusting that God will provide?

In these weeks leading to Easter, reflect on what it means to be a Christ follower and of the ministry you have embraced.   Spend time in prayer seeking the strength of the Holy Spirit to guide you, protect you and assist you in proclaiming to all the earth the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Blessings,

Steve

My Easter Basket: And the true story of Easter by Mary Manz Simon  encourages a symbolic connection between the cultural aspects and the religious foundations of the Easter holiday.

It begins "The colors in this basket are my own special way for me to tell the story of that first Easter Day."

Through sturdy die-cut pages, the text then highlights different colors (green, purple, red, white, brown and yellow) and tells what these can remind us of the biblical story of Jesus. For example, green  reminds us of the palm branches set before Jesus during his triumphal entry.

The story, as told through these symbolic colors, goes from Palm Sunday through the resurrection on Easter Day. The book concludes with John 11:25, quoted from the International Children's Bible, New Century Version.

"Jesus said, 'I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will have life even if he dies. And he who lives and believes in me will never die.'"

Some Parting Fun....
A mother was telling her little girl what her own childhood was like.

"We used to skate outside on a pond. I had a swing made from a tire; it hung from a tree in our front yard. We rode our pony. We picked wild raspberries in the woods."

The little girl was wide-eyed taking this in. At last she said,

"I sure wish I'd gotten to know you sooner!"
