Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter

Dear ,

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs." (NIV)

Satan has difficulty luring mature Christians into obvious sins such as murder or adultery. But he has a much easier time luring believers into more subtle sins. These often are sins of the heart, or sins of the tongue. Because these are more subtle, they're often more dangerous than other ones! Rudeness is one of these subtle sins.  It often springs from impatience, arrogance, or a lack of consideration for another person.

Let's take a simple example. Did you ever think that ignoring the sermon being preached on Sunday in church was sin? "I already know what the pastor is talking about, I've heard him a million times, and I feel like reading something else right now." Have you ever found yourself in this position? I honestly can say that I have been guilty of doing so. But shouldn't we all, "do to others as you would want to have done to yourself." In other words, if I want people to respect and listen to what I say, then I can't go to church and ignore the sermon as if I know more than the preacher or have already heard it! This is rude, arrogant, and shows a lack of love for the pastor who puts in  time and energy for the benefit of my own soul.

Ignoring people is just one example of rudeness.  In C.S. Lewis "The Screwtape Letters",  we see how Satan will twist many things around to lead us into Sin through our own effort, even when best intentions are present.   When we attempt to conform every aspect of our lives into His image, we must be delivered from even these subtle hints of rudeness that creep up in us. We must be willing to pause the television to listen to what our children have to say, to call our friends back who are asking for favors, to arrive on time so as not to waste the time of others, to patiently wait for people to finish what they have to say, to yield to pedestrians on the road, and so on.

Let's strive to live a life of constant consideration for others, and be delivered from the sin of rudeness.

Blessings,
Steve  <><

Who among us has never wondered if there might not really be a tempter sitting on our shoulders or dogging our steps? C.S. Lewis dispels all doubts. In The Screwtape Letters, one of his bestselling works, we are made privy to the instructional correspondence between a senior demon, Screwtape, and his wannabe diabolical nephew Wormwood. As mentor, Screwtape coaches Wormwood in the finer points, tempting his "patient" away from God.

Each letter is a masterpiece of reverse theology, giving the reader an inside look at the thinking and means of temptation. Tempters, according to Lewis, have two motives: the first is fear of punishment, the second a hunger to consume or dominate other beings. On the other hand, the goal of the Creator is to woo us unto himself or to transform us through his love from "tools into servants and servants into sons." It is the dichotomy between being consumed and subsumed completely into another's identity or being liberated to be utterly ourselves that Lewis explores with his razor-sharp insight and wit.

Some Parting Fun....
A little boy was afraid of the dark. One night his mother told him to go out to the back porch and bring her the broom.

The little boy turned to his mother and said, "Mama, I don't want to go out there. It's dark."

The mother smiled reassuringly at her son. "You don't have to be afraid of the dark," she explained. "Jesus is out there. He'll look after you and protect you."

The little boy looked at his mother real hard and asked, "Are you sure he's out there?"

"Yes, I'm sure. He is everywhere, and he is always ready to help you when you need him," she said.

The little boy thought about that for a minute and then went to the back door and cracked it a little. Peering out into the darkness, he called, "Jesus? If you're out there, would you please hand me the broom?"
