Dear ,

"Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart." Psalm 37:4

How tempting to fall into the prosperity gospel trap that if we are truly Christian, then God will bless us to overflowing with every earthly desire we crave.  It is so easy to rationalize this verse to mean something like, "I truly delight in the Lord, and I really desire a new boat, therefore He should give it to me."   The problem with this thinking is that someone can not be truly delighting in the Lord when material possessions become the main focus!  Their delight is in stuff and not in the Lord.

1 John 2:15 - "Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them."

Unfortunately we sometimes will also expect God to fulfill other desires of our heart that are not "material stuff".  Deep desires such as "I want children", or "I want to be married go unfulfilled even for those whose delight is in the Lord.  These desires are normal but still are not necessarily filled as a result of fully delighting in Him.

Another way of considering this verse is that when we truly delight in Him, He will place deep desires within us that can not be filled in any other way than through His supernatural grace.

If I am truly delighting in the Lord, I might expect that He may place an overwhelming desire within me to advance His kingdom in ways that are far beyond my normal desires and capabilities.  It may be to the mission field or to organize a study group at your home.  Several of our friends have been given desires that they never would have considered before delighting in Him.  And though His call may be outside of our comfort zone, we can be assured that His call is His enabling.

"The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it."  1 Thessalonians 5:24

When I delight in the Lord, then I can expect Him to move in ways that I am not familiar with. Such ways are exciting and have no human explanation attached to them. None of us, however, fully delights in the Lord, yet we have this record of Jesus: ".... for I do always those things that please Him" (John 8:29). When we are in Christ, then what Jesus has done in total obedience to the Father is credited to our account.

"Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths" (Prov.3:5-6).

Blessings,

Steve

Jesus is not safe, but He is satisfying!

Each of us has a restlessness, an inconsolable longing within. Some try to satisfy it with scenic vacations, creative accomplishments, huge cinematic productions, sexual exploits, sports extravaganzas, hallucinogenic drugs, ascetic rigors, managerial excellence, and more. Yet our longing remains.

John Piper turns your heart toward the one true Object of human desire-God. He shows how fulfilling your duty to delight in Him can change your attitude toward worship, marriage, material goods, and your very mission and purpose on earth. Join him on a journey from desperate desire to infinite delight.

In this groundbreaking new book, Francis Chan and Preston Sprinkle take

on the topic of hell and our eternal destiny, with a sense of humility and a deep respect for the inspired Word of God. They will address questions such as "Will everyone be saved?" and "Does God Get What He Wants in the End?" as well as reviewing in depth, everything Jesus said about Hell.

However, the authors warn that we have to guard ourselves against "a heartlessness" when we talk about this theology and this doctrine, because ultimately this is about people. Chan and Sprinkle lay all the evidence on the table and present all the facts from Scripture, so that people can decide what to believe for themselves.

Some Parting Fun....

A 4-year-old boy was asked to return thanks before Sunday dinner. The family members bowed their heads in expectation.

He began his prayer, thanking God for all his friends, naming them one by one. Then he thanked God for Mommy, Daddy, brother, sister, Grandma, Grandpa, and all his aunts and uncles. Then he began to thank God for the food. He gave thanks for the turkey, the dressing, the fruit salad, the cranberry sauce, the pies, the cakes, even the Cool Whip.

Then he paused, and everyone waited--and waited. After a long silence, the young fellow looked up at his mother and asked,

"If I thank God for the broccoli, won't he know that I'm lying?"
