Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter

Dear ,

This week's devotional is adapted from a message given by our former pastor, John Boyd, before he left to begin a new assignment.  Please read and meditate on the message and what its application in each of our lives could mean.

Can you D.I.G.G. it?

As Christians, we are called to be good and fertile soil, to be receptive to God's call on our lives, and to be people of action. So many of us, although well intentioned, fail to be the people God is calling us to be because we make everything too complicated.  We struggle to fit our lives into the mold that we envision God's will to be and often hinder, or bring dishonor, upon the Kingdom through our words, attitudes, or actions. Yet, our goal, our chief aim in life, the thing that we are made for, is to Glorify God.

Things could be so much simpler, and make us much more effective, if we would consider a simple question that would focus our lives and ministry on what matters the most;

"Does it Glorify God?"

In our personal lives, in our work, in our family, in our church.  What would happen if we asked this simple question over, and over, and over, in our lives before speaking, acting, or putting thought into any issue?  "Does it Glorify God?".  Do the things I think about, the attitudes I hold, the way I treat others, the places I go, the things I say, the actions that I am contemplating, Glorify God?

A simple question, yes, but just because the question is simple doesn't necessarily mean that the implementation will be easy.  Actually it could be quite difficult, especially at first, to do what it takes in each and every moment of our lives to first consider, and then truly bring glory to God.

So, what does it look like to glorify God?  How can I be sure that I am doing what it takes, in each situation, to make my life one that glorifies Him?   Here are seven things to consider that will help us know that we are bringing Glory to God.
  • In what I am doing or saying, is it pleasing to God? Does it please God, is it more pleasing to God or is it more pleasing to me? Am I doing this because I want to or because it pleases God?
  • Who gets the credit? Is it God or me? If no one sees me or acknowledges me is it okay?  If you are looking for something in return there is too much self involved.
  • What am I giving of myself in this? Is there sacrifice involved? Is God requiring something of me that goes beyond what is comfortable, to give up something of me that is not easy to give up? Often when we glorify God it requires more of ourselves to give to God something that is valuable and pleasing to Him.
  • Does this make me more dependent on God, or more self reliant.  In what I am about to say or do, can I do it only because God enables me to do it or to say it?
  • Does this draw me closer to God? Is my intimacy with God increased by what I'm about to day or do? If so, then it is Glorifying God.
  • Does what I'm about to day or do reflect my gratitude to God?  Does it show how thankful I am to a God that loves me, and cares for me, and provides for me, and is fond of me?
  • Does it acknowledge God's Glory and Value above all things? Whatever it is, am I verifying that God is truly Lord of Lords, above all things and worthy to be glorified?
If you can say yes to these questions in what you are doing, saying or contemplating then you will have a good indication that you are bringing Glory to God.  For additional confirmation, there are two more ways to know  for sure that you are Glorifying Him.
  • What does His Word say? God is glorified through His Living Word.  What does it say in His Word about what you are about to say or do as an individual or as a church?  If it is in His Word and you do it, you will Glorify Him.
  • What does the Holy Spirit say to you in the moment and through your conscience.  You know almost instantly what is right and good when you listen to what God is saying the Holy Spirit.  You know this is a good thing; you know this is a bad thing. Listen to the Holy Spirit.
What if we asked ourselves each and every day for a year, "Does it Glorify God", before doing, saying, thinking, etc.,?  What about one week?  How about a Day? Could you do it?   What would it be like if we each lived our lives so that God is Glorified in everything we do.

We live with a great amount of freedom and the choice is entirely up to you; will you "Digg" in and live each day asking, in all that you do and say,

"Does it Glorify God?"

Blessings,

Steve

WHAT IS JESUS WORTH TO YOU?

It's easy for American Christians to forget how Jesus said his followers would actually live, what their new lifestyle would actually look like. They would, he said, leave behind security, money, convenience, even family for him. They would abandon everything for the gospel. They would take up their crosses daily...

BUT WHO DO YOU KNOW WHO LIVES LIKE THAT? DO YOU?

In Radical, David Platt challenges you to consider with an open heart how we have manipulated the gospel to fit our cultural preferences. He shows what Jesus actually said about being his disciple--then invites you to believe and obey what you have heard. And he tells the dramatic story of what is happening as a "successful" suburban church decides to get serious about the gospel according to Jesus.

Finally, he urges you to join in The Radical Experiment --a one-year journey in authentic discipleship that will transform how you live in a world that desperately needs the Good News Jesus came to bring.

In Radical, David Platt's plea for Christians to take back their faith from the American Dream resonated with readers everywhere, and the book quickly became a New York Times bestseller. Now in Radical Together, the author broadens his call, challenging us to unite around a gospel-centered vision.

How, he asks, might such a vision reshape our priorities as the body of Christ? How might well-intentioned Christians actually prevent God's people from accomplishing God's purpose? And, how can we best unleash the people of God in the church to carry out the purpose of God in the world?

Writing to everyone who desires to make an impact for God's glory-whether you are an involved member, a leader, or a pastor-Dr. Platt shares six foundational ideas that fuel radical obedience among Christians in the church. With compelling Bible teaching and inspiring stories from around the world, he will help you apply the revolutionary claims and commands of Christ to your community of faith in fresh, practical ways.

Some Parting Fun....

A Sunday school teacher was discussing the Ten Commandments with her fine and six year olds.

After explaining the commandment to "honor thy father and thy mother," she asked, "Is there a commandment that teaches us how to treat our brothers and sisters?"

Without missing a beat one little boy answered,

"Thou shall not kill."
