Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter

Dear ,

Does the thought of thinking about "theology" scare you?  Many of us hear the word and think that it is way above us.   Don't be afraid, the word theology can be broken down into its' root words which simply stated mean the study of God.  Theo "God", ology "the study of".  It doesn't have to be that hard.

Perhaps the greatest theologian of the 20th century was Karl Barth, whose volume called Dogmatics is still required reading in every 1st-rate seminary in America. Barth defined the neo-Orthodox understanding of Grace. He was a genius and wrote and spoke that way.

I love the story of when he was invited to lecture at The University of Chicago.

As you can imagine, the center was packed to capacity at standing room only. And, as expected, Barth delivered a magnificent, deep, scholarly address. Afterward there was time for a Question and Answer session.

A student in the audience asked: "What is the central truth of the Christian Faith?"

Everyone sat poised, pens and notebooks in hand, to try and feverishly record what they knew would be a deeply scholarly response.

Barth never hesitated. The greatest Christian thinker of the 20th century answered quickly and in a single sentence. He said,

"The central truth of the Christian Faith is this: Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so."

In one simple sentence from a children's hymn, Karl Barth articulated the heart of our Faith. Christianity is and has always been built on the principle of God's unconditional, unfailing love for us.

As we study God and what it means to live for Him, let us never forget that one overwhelming fact about God - He loves us so much that He sent His one and only Son, Jesus, so that whoever would believe on Him would not perish but have everlasting life!

Blessings,
Steve

50 Prayers - Karl Barth
Purchase Online
The first and basic act of theological work is prayer, Karl Barth claimed in his lecture Introduction to Evangelical Theology. But how did this preeminent theologian, widely considered one of the most influential theologians of the modern era, craft and present his own public prayers?

This collection for the first time makes Barth's pastoral prayers available to an English-speaking audience, offering a fresh perspective on how the great Swiss theologian understood this central practice of Christian life.

The prayers are organized according to seasons of the liturgical year, making them ideal for both group use and individual reflection.

Surely there's more than one way to get to heaven?

Bestselling author Andy Stanley addresses this popular belief held even among Christians. But believing that all good people go to heaven raises major problems, Stanley reveals.

Is goodness not rewarded, then? Is Christianity not fair? Maybe not, he says. Readers will find out why Jesus taught that goodness is not even a requirement to enter heaven - and why Christianity is beyond fair.

In "How Good is Good Enough", Andy Stanley leads believers and skeptics alike to a grateful awareness of God's enormous grace and mercy.

Some Parting Fun....

A new Pastor in a small town spent the first four days making personal visits to each of the members, inviting them to come to his first services.

The following Sunday the church was all but empty. Accordingly, the Pastor placed a notice in the local newspapers, stating that, because the church was dead, it was everyone's duty to give it a decent Christian burial. The funeral would be held the following Sunday afternoon, the notice said.

Morbidly curious, a large crowd turned out for the "funeral." In front of the pulpit, they saw a closed coffin, smothered in flowers. After the Pastor delivered the eulogy, he opened the coffin and invited his congregation to come forward and pay their final respects to their dead church.

Filled with curiosity as to what would represent the corpse of a "dead church," all the people eagerly lined up to look in the coffin. Each "mourner" peeped into the coffin then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look.

In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a large mirror.

  Smiles To You
