Independence Day |
Dear ,
This July 4th it would be good to remember that many of the founding fathers of the United States of America were men of deep religious convictions based in the Bible and their Christian faith in Jesus Christ. Of the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence, nearly half (24) held seminary or Bible school degrees.
These quotes of the founding fathers will give you an overview of their strong moral and spiritual convictions which helped form the foundations of our nation and our government.
George Washington: 1st President of the United States
"While we are zealously performing the duties of good citizens and soldiers, we certainly ought not to be inattentive to the higher duties of religion. To the distinguished character of Patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian."
The Writings of Washington, pp. 342-343
John Adams: 2nd President - Signer of the Declaration of Independence
"The general principles on which the fathers achieved independence were the general principles of Christianity. I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God."
Adams wrote this on June 28, 1813, in a letter to Thomas Jefferson.
Thomas Jefferson: 3rd President - Drafter and Signer of the Declaration of Independence.
"I am a real Christian - that is to say, a disciple of the doctrines of Jesus Christ."
The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, p. 385
Benjamin Rush: Signer of the Declaration of Independence
"The gospel of Jesus Christ prescribes the wisest rules for just conduct in every situation of life. Happy they who are enabled to obey them in all situations!"
The Autobiography of Benjamin Rush, pp. 165-166
John Hancock: 1st Signer of the Declaration of Independence
"Resistance to tyranny becomes the Christian and social duty of each individual. ... Continue steadfast and, with a proper sense of your dependence on God, nobly defend those rights which heaven gave, and no man ought to take from us."
History of the United States of America, Vol. II, p. 229
James Madison: 4th President of the United States
"Cursed be all that learning that is contrary to the cross of Christ." -America's Providential History, p. 93.
Patrick Henry: Ratifier of the Constitution - "Give me Liberty or give me death"
"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. For this very reason peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here." The Trumpet Voice of Freedom: Patrick Henry of Virginia, p. iii.
There are many more examples of the faith and Christian beliefs held by our country's founders. Don't be misled by those who would tell you that America was not based upon the very tenets of Christianity.
Blessings,
Steve

Faith of Our Founding Fathers |
| Purchase Online |
How firm a foundation?
Were the men who carved this great nation out of the wilderness and drafted its founding documents God-fearing, Bible-believing Christians? Or, were they enlightened Deists, Transcendentalists, and Unitarians?
Educators, scholars, and historians have for years argued both sides of the issue. But, what do the facts say? What do the actual founding documents say? What do the intimate papers, diaries, and letters of the founders themselves say?
In this probing study, Dr. Tim LaHaye moves past all the rhetoric, argumentation, and historical revisionism and simply examines the plain evidence. Like an undaunted detective, he uncovers long forgotten clues to the true faith of America's founding fathers.
This book goes a long way in solving the mystery of our nation's past. |
Original Intent |
| purchase online |

Original Intent combines hundreds of quotes from primary sources with the author's exposition on hot topics such as revisionism, judicial activism, and separation of church and state.
A substantial appendix encompasses full texts of the founding documents, biographical sketches of numerous Founders, and extensive reference notes.

Some Parting Fun.... |
The church trustees had gathered a group of volunteers to paint the church building. All was going very well as they finished painting the first side but they noticed that the point was being used quicker than anticipated.
Being that it was a long way into town for another couple of gallons, they decided that they would thin out the remaining paint to make it go farther. That worked out great and the remaining three sides of the church were finished up by evening time.
That night, it rained: and it rained hard.
The next morning when the chairman of the trustees stopped by to admire the work, he saw that the first side was looking great, but that the paint on the other three sides had washed away. The chairman looked up in the sky in anguish and cried out, "What shall I do?"
A voice came back from the heavens saying,
"Repaint, and thin no more!"
