Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter |
Dear ,
During last week's sermon our pastor challenged us with this question:
How is it with your soul?
I am afraid that a lot of us consider our souls as something we really do not need to nourish or develop. Probably more accurate would be the statement that most of us don't even think about the condition of our soul, much less to be concerned with the condition of someone else's soul.
What if we kept similar attitudes about our bodies? Not feeding the body, or not caring for illness in the body would, and does, lead to very undesirable consequences. Without proper nourishment and care our bodies decay and die. Or what if we attended to our career, or other interests with the same attitude? Those endeavors would soon be lost.
It's the same with our soul. That place within that houses our connection to, and communion with, God our creator. Without care and nourishment our soul, our very relationship with God, dries up, suffers, and dies.
So, how is it with your soul today? Not, did you attend church last week?, or do you have a quiet time each day?, or even how are you doing?, how is it going?, or what's happening?, but, how is your soul doing? Are you growing in your relationship with, and service to Christ?
And how are the souls of your friends today? Are they strong souls, grieving souls, healthy souls, or lost souls? How can you help them in their journey to become believers in, or, closer to Christ?
It is a tough question to ask, and, we may need to find another way to ask "How is it with your soul?", but if we fail to ask it we are failing to attend to the most basic need of human beings.
Each week, in the newsletter, I endeavor to provide information on resources that can help develop deeper insight, and growth, in the Christian walk. As you journey, feel free to give me a call at any time, or send an email to steve@logosbookstorenky.com, to discuss where you are in your walk or to find additional resources that will help you in your faith.
Blessings, Steve <><

My Utmost For His Highest |

I am determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and for Him alone. So says Oswald Chambers in the first of the daily devotions in My Utmost for His Highest.
This attitude of complete surrender to God pervades the work, the most popular devotional book ever published. In the words of former U. S. Senate chaplain Richard Halverson, No other book except the Bible has influenced my walk with Christ at such deep and maturing levels. Now in a deluxe collectors edition, the value of Chambers words of truth can be treasured for a lifetime.
Oswald Chambers, a Scotsman who converted to Christianity in his teens under the ministry of Charles Spurgeon, has been affecting Christians with his devotional words since My Utmost for His Highest was first published in 1935. This acknowledged classic contains 365 daily readings that take heady doctrine and make it practical, realistic, and intensely personal. With humor and humility, Chambers speaks plainly to the common man struggling with devotion to Christ in daily living.
Worldly cares and self-serving desires begin to lose their appeal as Chambers aides the reader in transforming his mind by viewing life through the instruction of God's Word. Richard Halverson, former chaplain of the United States Senate, attests to this: "no book except the Bible has influenced my walk with Christ at such deep maturing levels." This is Chambers's chief desire, directing the reader to "shut out every other consideration and keep yourself before God for this one thing only--My Utmost for His Highest... determined to be absolutely and entirely for Him and for Him alone." --Jill Heatherly |
Spiritual Formation Bible |

Many people are looking for a fresh way to read the Bible, not as a text to be mastered, but as a story to enter into and a lifestyle to pursue. In this unique Bible, the foremost names in Christian spirituality and biblical scholarship come together to provide a Bible that rediscovers Scripture as living text, rich with insights into how to live our lives more intimately with God.
Spearheaded by bestselling authors Richard J. Foster (Celebration of Discipline) and Dallas Willard (The Divine Conspiracy), The Renovare Spiritual Formation Bible introduces the concept of the "with-God life," a model for seeing the whole of Scripture as the unfolding story of God's plan for our loving relationship with the Creator. This central theme weaves throughout the essays, introductions, notes, and exercises, powerfully revealing how God is present to his people today and throughout history.
Yet our relationship with God should not be passive. Concrete practices-Spiritual Disciplines-have been used throughout church history to guide disciples of Jesus. This Bible integrates the Spiritual Disciplines into the Christian life by showing how they are central to the Bible's teachings and stories. Abraham and Ruth, Moses and Deborah, Jesus and the disciples all provide amazing examples of the life-changing power of prayer, worship, fasting, celebration, and many other Spiritual Disciplines. Scripture thus becomes a primary means for the discovery, instruction, and practice of these disciplines as well as a tool for spiritual formation.
Combining the highest possible biblical scholarship with the deepest possible heart devotion, this new Bible project seeks to nourish inner transformation by unlocking and revealing the profound resources within Scripture for changing our hearts and characters and bringing them in line with what God wants for our lives. The Renovare Spiritual Formation Bible will redefine what the Bible means for Christian discipleship. |

Listening is Hard Work! |
After listening restlessly to a long and tedious sermon, a 6-year-old boy asked his father what the preacher did the rest of the week.
"Oh, he's a very busy man," the father replied. "He takes care of church business, visits the sick, ministers to the poor.... And then he has to have time to rest up. Talking in public isn't an easy job, you know."
The boy thought about that, then said, "Well, listening ain't easy, either."
