Logos Christian Bookstore Newsletter |
Dear ,
Some Christians give up something in the 40 days preceding Easter, known as Lent - as an opportunity to focus on humility and repentance.
Others believe that if one needs to give up something, one should do it year-round. Since the Bible doesn't speak explicitly to the subject, neither is "right" or "wrong."
One pastor, during an Ash Wednesday service, shared the following:
"Do not give up something that you are going to purge on Easter morning. Your Lenten sacrifice of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups does not make you a better Christian if you eat a bag full of them before sundown on Easter day and forget all about Lent. God doesn't want your chocolate, He wants you.
When contemplating your sacrifice, make sure you are growing closer to Him. Maybe you don't need to give up anything. Maybe you need to give something... namely, yourself.
If you must give up something, give up sin."
In Galatians 5:19-21 the apostle Paul warns us about the sinful nature.
"What the sinful nature does is clear. It enjoys sexual sins, impure acts and wild living. It worships statues of gods. It also worships evil powers. It is full of hatred and fighting. It is full of jealousy and fits of anger. It is interested only in getting ahead. It stirs up trouble. It separates people into their own little groups. It wants what others have. It gets drunk and takes part in wild parties. It does many things of that kind. I warn you now as I did before. People who live like that will not receive God's kingdom." (New International Readers Version)
So, this season of reflection, let's concentrate on giving ourselves. What is it that may be hindering our relationship with God? To give ourselves, what attitude, habit, or behavior might we need to give up?
-
The attitude of impatience with difficult people? -
A short temper? -
Foul language? -
A selfish life that is inconsiderate of others? -
Cheating in school or on the job?
I encourage you to pray that God will show us all what we should give up, and to strengthen us to persevere so that we may give Him a pure heart.
Blessings, Steve <><

So, You're a Christian ! |
click to purchase online | Now What? Congratulations! You've made a decision and made the commitment. You've accepted Christ as your Savior. So, you're a Christian! Now what? Someone once said, "Growing old is mandatory; growing up is optional." Scripture disagrees: Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good (1 Peter 2:2-3). Christianity is all about growth. Just as physical newborns must grow and develop, spiritual newborns must develop skills for functioning and growing in the Body of Christ. Too often, though, when someone accepts Christ as an adult, they receive little if any assistance to assure that spiritual growth. As a result, they can wander for years in a labyrinth of confusion, never understanding why they're so unsatisfied. If you've found yourself in a quandary, or know someone who has, this book was written for you. Born out of her personal struggle to grow spiritually, this study by author and pastor's wife Catherine Painter encourages and assists spiritual babes through those first, important stages of Christian development. Both new and long-time believers learn the similarities and differences in being born, and being born again; how to communicate - with God in prayer and quiet times; how to feed themselves - with God's Word; how to dress themselves - in the armor of God; how to assume their role in the family - using their talents and spiritual gifts; what it means to bear the family resemblance - by manifesting the fruit of the Spirit; how to share - their testimony; how to walk - the road that leads to life; and how to talk - the language of Christians. So whether you're a new Christian wondering where to go from here, or a long-time Christian who knows you've missed something somewhere along the way, Congratulations! You're a Christian! Now what? |

So that's why! |
I was out walking with my Grandson. He picked up something off of the ground and started to put it in his mouth.
I took the item away from him and I asked him not to do that.
'Why' my Grandson asked.
"Because it's been on the ground; you don't know where it's been, it's dirty, and probably has germs," I replied.
At this point, my Grandson looked at me with total admiration and asked, "Grandma, how do you know all this stuff?? You are so smart."
I was thinking quickly and said to him, "all Grandmas know stuff. It's on the Grandma Test. You have to know it, or they don't let you be a Grandma."
We walked along in silence for 2 or 3 minutes, but he was evidently pondering this new information.
"Oh....I get it! he beamed, So if you don't pass the test you have to be the Grandpa".
'Exactly,' I replied with a big smile on my face.
