 The McCormack Update

Friends and Colleagues:Dean Steve Crosby - 09

As we are moving toward the end of the school year, it is thrilling to see the number of exciting activities carried on by MGS faculty, staff and alums. Here are just a few:

  • On Thursday, April 28th, UMass Boston will be jam packed with MGS activities. I hope you can attend some or all of them. It starts at 8:45-noon, when our Center for Social Policy hosts "Working to Overcome the Achievement Gap - Putting the Pieces Together," in the Campus Center third floor ballroom. Then I hope you will be able to attend the Conflict Resolution program's annual Slomoff Lecture, "Conflict in Teams: Antecedents, Dynamics, and Remedies," featuring J. Richard Hackman of Harvard University, at 2:00 pm in Campus Center Ballroom A. And then dash over to the 11th floor of Healey Library for "Celebrating Research @ UMass Boston" where our own Dr. Michael Johnson will be recognized.
  • The University awarded 3 Joseph P. Healey Research Grants to McCormack faculty: Amy Smith, Nina Silverstein and Padraig O'Malley. Congratulations!
  • Padraig O'Malley is in the process of convening the 2nd annual conference of the Forum for Cities in Transition (FCT) in Derry/Londonderry, Northern Ireland from May 23rd-26th with delegates from 12 divided cites and 4 continents. The first inaugural conference of the FCT was held at UMass Boston in April 2009. For nearly 2 years now, documentarian James Demo has been working on a film about Padraig called "The Peacemaker." If you visit this site, you can see a preview of the film, and a solicitation for financial support to bring the project to fruition. Donations will be much appreciated.
  • This has been a banner year for our Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy:

- sponsoring $175,000 Research Fellowship for Women of Color Leaders

- selected to receive the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Council for  Research on Women

- CSPAN recently covered the Center's program on "I Want My Million Dollars! Why Every Woman Should Care About the Gender Wage Gap"

- recently published reports, "Unfinished Business: Building Equality for Women in the Construction Trades" and "Caring for Women: A Profile of the Midwifery Workforce in Massachusetts"

  • 2008 Dispute Resolution alum John Lewis Moore is working on an extraordinary project in South Sudan. I hope we'll get to hear more about this amazing adventure when he returns.
  • The Collins Center for Public Management has just signed an impressive agreement with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Administration and Finance to help them implement a comprehensive performance management program throughout all of state government. This carries on the legacy of performance management left by founding director Shelley Metzenbaum, now doing performance management for OMB in the White House; similar projects are under discussion in Rhode Island, Tennessee, Delaware, and New Jersey. You should also know that Collins Center personnel are doing much of the staffing of the financial turnaround of the bankrupt community of Central Falls, Rhode Island.

There is much more, and I always worry about leaving something important out. We have an exciting, growing, vibrant college, with distinguished academic programs and robust research and applied policy programs. This is an exciting place to be.

And God knows, the world certainly needs people who know how to do local, national and international policy development well.

XiangtanPeople's Court Daily, a publication of the Supreme People's Court which is distributed to every court in China, devoted a long, highly favorable article to the just-concluded MGS Center for Peace, Democracy and Development/Xiangtan University seminar comparing the US jury and Chinese citizen assessor systems. This article is extraordinarily significant; as it endorses reforms in the citizen assessor system, credits the Xiangtan Seminar which CPDD co-sponsored, and quotes positively and at length from presentations on the American jury system by three American judges who are part of the Center's project focused on judicial education in China, which is funded by a grant from USAID.

Center for Social Policy
I am pleased to announce that next Monday, the Center for Social Policy will be welcoming Jean McGuire to our team. Below is Jean's short bio...I think you will see that she brings competencies and experience that will enrich our work and that of the MGS immensely. I had the pleasure of coming to know Jean when we were both doctoral students at the Heller School. I can say with confidence that she will be a very generous member of our team and that of the MGS.

Please join me in welcoming Jean to the MGS.

The Annual Sylvia and Benjamin Slomoff Lectureship in Conflict Resolution

J. Richard Hackman "Conflict in Teams: Antecedents, Dynamics, and Remedies" featuring J. Richard Hackman of Harvard University, UMass Boston's Campus Center Ballroom A.

Teams often are formed to take on hard problems, those whose solution requires collaboration among members who have a diversity of perspectives and skills, and who may come from organizations with a history of unfriendly relations. This talk explores the dynamics of the conflicts that can stall such teams, and identifies some leadership strategies that can help members draw constructively on their differences.  More...

Conflict Resolution Masters Project:

Interactive Theater and the Bystander Effect

For his Masters Project, Conflict Resolution Masters Candidate David D'Alessandro has developed an interactive theater project designed to convey information about conflict resolution techniques and the bystander effect.

You are invited to attend one of 3 performances taking place on campus:

ALL TIMES ARE 4:00-6:00pm

Wednesday, 4/27 Campus Center room 2545

Thursday, 4/28 Pointe Lounge (3rd floor Campus Center)

Friday, 4/29 Campus Center room 2545

We witness conflicts in various forms on a daily basis. Often, we do not know how to intervene in these conflicts successfully. You are invited to participate in a social justice activity related to the bystander effect.

Three scenes will be performed in which some form of harassment or conflict occurs. You will have an opportunity to witness these interactions and then be given a chance to change the outcome. Come develop techniques to help diffuse conflicts that occur on a daily basis.
