Friends and Colleagues:
As I prepare for some serious vacation on Buzzard's Bay, in South Dartmouth, MA, I am pleased to report the continuing successes and changes at McCormack Graduate School. Among the most notable:
· The Commonwealth Compact has been recognized locally and nationally for its accomplishment in the challenging world of diversity and inclusion. Colleen Richards Powell, former Deputy Director, was recognized as an up and coming leader in "40 under 40" by The Network Journal in NYC. Georgianna Melendez, Co-Director, was presented the "Humanitarian Award" by the Boston Center for Community and Justice (BCCJ) for her work for social justice, and was recognized as one of the 50 Most Influential Puerto Rican Women in MA by the Puerto Rican Festival of MA Committee. And Commonwealth Compact was recognized by the Jewish Alliance for Law and Social Action (JALSA) for its work in promoting social justice.
· As I described in the past, we are tremendously excited about expanding our policy studies into an even deeper global reach, culminating in a new PhD Program in Global Policy Studies expected to begin in September of 2011. To accommodate this new PhD Program, the Department that now houses our Masters Degree in International Relations and our Dispute Resolution Program has been renamed the Department of Conflict Resolution, Human Security and Global Governance.
· One of the key strategies of our new Collaborative Institute on Oceans, Climate and Security is to partner with other major institutions to give us the substantive reach, contacts and experience to serve this vast emerging area of intellectual endeavor. To that end, we are pleased to announce the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Battelle Memorial Institute, our first Signature Partner in this venture.
· Dr. Bing Chen, Professor Emeritus of our Gerontology Department and long time holder of our Manning Chair, is the 2010 winner of the Gerontological Society of America Award for Outstanding Research. This recognition is an honor not only for Bing, but for the Gerontology Department and Gerontology Institute at UMass Boston.
· In collaboration with Charlie Kravetz, former President and News Director of NECN, we've been considering establishing a new Center on Civil Discourse, committed to reinvigorating debate about great issues, that is factual, enlightening, compelling-and civil! Using that structure, we have applied for an exciting NEH grant on "Civility and Democracy." But with or without that grant, we will pursue this important topic.
If your life's work is in the public policy arena, these are deeply disturbing times-desperate environmental problems, desperate economic problems, two desperate wars in lands with no apparent ability to capitalize on our sacrifices of blood and treasure, and a political leadership which seems to have utterly lost a commitment to progress before partisanship (speaking of civil discourse). But hope does spring eternal, and as I look out over a beautiful Boston Harbor, from this vibrant campus, on a sunny, dry day, I can only hope for the best. The Red Sox are in the hunt, and hydrangeas are in full bloom.
So let's enjoy the lazy, hazy, crazy days of July and August.
