Friends and Colleagues:
My fourth commencement as Dean was highlighted by the
presence of commencement speaker Vicki Kennedy. UMass Boston learned that the wife
of the great Senator shares his special gift: though she walks with kings, her
connection with the rest of us is compassionate and genuine. McCormack
Graduate School
celebrated the award of 6 doctoral degrees, 74 masters degrees and 35 certificates. It was a great day. Many of you have followed the work of Padraig O'Malley, our
Moakley Chair on Peace and Reconciliation. This month, Padraig convened the second annual Forum on Cities in
Transition from Conflict, sponsored by Serbian and Albanian representatives
from Mitrovica, Kosovo. It was an
extraordinary achievement for the Mitrovicans, hosting an international
conference in a dilapidated city just eleven years from war, with unreliable
utilities and a conference facility which wasn't completed until the night
before we began. Eight other delegations
to the conference included Nicosia, Cyprus; Derry/Londonderry, Ireland; Belfast;
Beirut; Jerusalem; Haifa; Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina; and Kirkuk. The
conference was often moving and always fascinating, as it seemed to further
demonstrate the validity of Padraig's conviction that the best people to foster
the spirit of reconciliation in a divided community are people who share the
same experiences in other divided communities. MGS was well represented. In
addition to me and the Moakley staff we had 4 former or present students
helping the Mitrovicans staff the conference Cassidy Evans, Jeffrey Range, Pat Peterson, Rima Mahmoud, Padraig O'Malley, Nancy Riordan, Steve Crosby | ; Richard Kobayashi from the
Collins Center led a panel on economic development and reconstruction; Rula
Deeb from the Haifa delegation is an active participant in Donna Haig
Friedman's Fulbright project with Haifa; and we offered scholarships to two of
the great young Mitrovican staff, one Albanian and one Serb. This conference clearly had a material impact on the ability
of the Mitrovicans to work together and to enhance the prospects for
cross-ethnic collaboration in that community. And the enthusiasm of all the delegations to hold another conference next
year in Derry/Londonderry reinforced the importance of this model.
MGS Fellow and renowned biographer Nigel Hamilton has just
published American Caesars, Lives of the Presidents from Franklin D. Roosevelt to George W. Bush, a fascinating new look at twelve leaders of
the American empire since World War II. Nigel also hosted the first Compleat Biographer Conference, which attracted nearly
160 participants from dozens of states and from nations as far away as Chile, the United
Kingdom, and Holland. Biographers of all stripes were in
attendance, from Pulitzer Prize winners to writers beginning their first
work. At the conference, Nigel was
elected Board President of the Biographers International Organization. Congratulations Nigel.
So concludes my fourth year as Dean of the McCormack Graduate
School. I could not be more proud of the continued
impressive work of the Centers and Institutes which preceded me, or of the
potential impact of our new Centers and Institutes, or of our expanding and
increasingly rigorous academic programs. I think we have cemented our position as a leading academic, research,
and programmatic force in our city and state, even as we are moving
aggressively to expand our reach in the global policy arena. I am equally proud that all of our office
staff and graduate program administrators have made attention to customer
service the touchstone of their work. I
feel extraordinarily fortunate to have been offered this opportunity-not only to
build a new college, but also to participate in the dramatic reinvigoration and
growth of UMass Boston under the bold and visionary leadership of Chancellor
Keith Motley and Provost Winston Langley. I wish you all a delightful summer. P.S. I received an
overwhelming five responses to my inquiry in the last Update about the content
of my political musings in this medium. Four of the five encouraged me to stick
with it, so I probably will, perhaps muting the personal opinions.
 Steve Crosby, Dean
