Friends and Colleagues:
Okay! So we got a
health care reform bill, and perhaps a rejuvenated President. Maybe Obama is beginning to become
comfortable with the exercise of political power, and using his bully pulpit,
even if it requires a little demagoguery. Surely now he can use some of that to
get financial regulatory reform. How on earth a political party can be against
re-regulation of the financial services industry and aggressive consumer
protection is beyond me, whether it is on the merits or the politics. Just last week, we learned that the top ten
hedge fund managers made nearly $20
billion last year, mostly by guessing correctly that the federal
government-that means taxpayers-would bail out the big financial
institutions. And to make it even more
outrageous, they were taxed on that wealth at a capital gains (which they are
not) rate (probably 20%) whereas regular working stiffs like us pay 25%-35% on
our income over $34,000. It is precisely
this kind of injustice, protected by lobbying fees of almost half a billion
dollars, that make people deeply angry and resentful. If there were ever an issue that required a
little demagoguery, this is it. And if
Obama doesn't do it, the Tea Partiers will.
Meanwhile

When not creating web pages
for McCormack Graduate School, Barbara Graceffa finds many venues to express
her creative talents. On March 29, she taught a brown bag seminar for the Osher
Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), "Color My World: The Psychology and
Selection Colors: Tips from an Interior Decorator".
She also entered a photo in
Urban Mission photography contest sponsored by the Psychology Department.
The photo depicts the street sign Hope Avenue and a home displaying the
American flag on the Milton/Dorchester; she passes this intersection on the way
to work each day.
Finally, the Boston Athletic
Association (the folks who put on the Boston Marathon) has commissioned Barbara
to make two commemorative quilts celebrating their sister marathon in Ohme,
Japan. In 1966, when Japanese-US relations were still strained following
WWII, an English-speaking Japanese reporter reached out to the organizers of
the Boston Marathon offering to sponsor two US athletes to travel to the Ohme
race. Fourty-four years later, the reciprocal relationship continues; a delegation
of Japanese reporters and officials from the Ohme race will be in Boston again
this month to cheer on their marathoners and a representative from each group
will be given a quilt designed and sewed by Barbara; they are made up of
Japanese fabrics coupled with sport shorts, T-shirts and embroidered patches
from both races.
