Friends and Colleagues:
As we approach the holiday vacation, I'm pleased to report
on exciting year-end developments at the McCormack Graduate
School:
- As you
may have read, Padraig O'Malley, who holds the Moakley Chair of Peace and
Reconciliation, orchestrated an extraordinary conference in Bagdad,
comprised of representatives of the municipal, regional and state
parliaments of Kirkuk and neighboring Kurdistan. An agreement reached at that conference
could be the basis for a reconciliation of the future of Kirkuk, one of the most intractable
problems in Iraqi politics. News
coverage is found at Kirkuk's Factions are on Speaking Terms and a long interview from NPR's "Here and
Now" is at Negotiating Peace in Iraq.
- The Edward J.
Collins Center for Public Management successfully helped 80 municipalities
complete applications for federal stimulus money, causing staff at the
Metropolitan Area Planning Council to write, "the ARRA [Stimulus] Program,
and the partnership with the Collins Center has exceeded even my highest
expectations and it has been immensely productive." In addition, the Collins Center
is launching its first course in "Performance Management in Government and Non-Profits." Led initially by Dr. Shelley Metzenbaum, Founding
Director of the Collins Center who is now leading performance management
for the White House Office of Management and Budget, the Collins Center
is becoming a national leader in the emerging discipline of performance
management in the public sector.
- I've
mentioned before the ambitious "Reshaping Poverty Policy" initiative
undertaken by the Center for Social Policy. I hope you'll watch this video
and join them.
It is amazing how time flies. It's been a remarkable year: an extraordinary new Presidency; a shocking
economic collapse; an impossible Gordian Knot in Afganistan and Pakistan. And closer to home: a continually expanding and challenging
faculty; a dynamic new Provost driving internationalization of our campus;
wrestling with constant budget cuts; and now the University's likely purchase
of the Bayside Expo Center site. Next year should be something.
May you all have a relaxing and renewing holiday season, and
may the New Year bring us all some glimmer of peace and prosperity.
Best wishes.
