 The McCormack Update
September 22, 2009
Friends and Colleagues:                                                                                                                                                                   Dean Steve Crosby - 09

From 1996 to 1999, Robert Woodbury was the Director of the McCormack Institute.  Among his many other accomplishments, he was the Chancellor of the University of Maine system from 1986-1993.  I regret to tell you that Bob died recently after a long illness.  I only met Bob a few times, but could easily understand why he was revered as a caring and stimulating leader.  Padraig O'Malley wrote of Bob,

"Maybe we can use the occasion of his death to rededicate ourselves to what he believed: that the person was more important than the policy, and that if we do not treat each other with respect and caring, we cannot expect to serve well the people who are supposedly the beneficiaries of the policies we advocate in our work.

All of the people associated with McCormack Graduate School wish Bob's wife Anne the best in this difficult time.

School is underway, and we have welcomed back about 285 students, an increase of 17% from last year.  Every program has had substantial increases in applications, and several programs are becoming increasingly competitive.  If this trend continues, we will consider adding additional cohorts to some of our Masters programs.

If you haven't seen Public Policy Professor Christian Weller on MSNBC and CNBC, you are missing some interesting economics and occasionally an interesting food fight. Check this out: Christian Weller.

The campus is working hard to control the seasonal flu and H1N1 virus outbreaks. Visit www.umb.edu/flu for the most recent information and the schedule of flu shots.

A couple of notable upcoming events:

     *     All MGS Event! Please do join us on Tuesday, September 22nd at 4:00 in the Ryan Lounge, for an all MGS student, faculty, and staff "welcome back."  We'll meet new people, learn about new programs, and eat heartily.

     *     Professor Michael Johnson from the Public Policy Department is co-hosting a round table in the Campus Center on September 29th, "Race, Ethnicity and Urban Policy: What Role in National Politics?" 5:30-7:00 PM.

Many personnel changes this year:

Professor Jeff Burr returns to the Gerontology Department with my great gratitude for his 3 years of service as Associate Dean.  His wisdom, academic integrity, and straight talk were critical in my formative years as Dean.

Professor Connie Chan becomes Associate Dean.

Professor Michael Johnson becomes Chair of the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs.

Professor Maximiliane Szinovacz assumes the Distinguished Manning Chair in the Gerontology Department.

Professor Ellen Bruce becomes Interim Director of the Gerontology Institute.

Assistant Dean Sandy Blanchette will become Education Program Developer in the Collins Center when she returns from her sabbatical in October.  Candyce Carragher will become the full-time Business and Grants Manager when Sandy leaves.

Barbara Graceffa moves to nearly full-time as On-line Communications Analyst.

Mike MacPhee assumes the role of Graduate Program Administrator (GPA) for the Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs.

Roni Lipton and Ann Rugnetta become GPA and Program Coordinator respectively, of the new Department of Dispute Resolution and International Relations.

Shelley Metzenbaum, Founding Director of the Collins Center, will be joining the Obama Administration to work on performance and personnel management.  Deputy Director Steve McGoldrick and I have asked David Sparks (Assistant to the Dean and Director of Marketing and Communications) to serve as Interim Director, allowing Steve McGoldrick to continue to focus on the Center's external work with state agencies and local governments across the Commonwealth.

The Red Sox get the wild card, but Tom Brady looks human. Another Fall full of excitement and anxiety.

Connie Chan
Professor Connie Chan, new MGS Associate Dean, had quite a summer experience.  She was selected as a member of the UMASS Boston Education and Training Team to travel to Dakar, Senegal to conduct educational workshops for Senegalese teachers and coaches.  A Sport Psychologist by training, Connie lead workshops in motivation, team cohesion, and performance enhancement in Dakar and nearby villages.  She described the experience as "an amazing one.  Our Senegalese teachers and coaches were some of the best students I have ever had, full of enthusiasm and a love of learning.  Senegal is poor in resources but so rich in culture and spirit.
