Friends and Colleagues: There's a lot going on:
We're pleased to announce the arrival of Georgianna Meléndez who will serve as Co-Director of the Commonwealth Compact. Her job is to help assure, with Bob Turner and Colleen Richards Powell, that the Compact's next few years are even more successful than the first. Georgianna was recently the Assistant Commissioner of Strategic Development and Community Relations at the Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) and before that served as Executive Director of Casa Myrna Vazquez, Inc.
Dr. Darren Kew of our Dispute Resolution program led a group of conflict resolution experts on a remarkable trip to Nigeria on "Building Citizen Engagement and Resolution Skills in Civil Society." The team had the opportunity to learn from the work of Nigerian counterparts and to present cutting edge conflict resolution training to a broad range of local leaders, practitioners and students. Nearly 2,000 Nigerians took part.
On March 5th, the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy partnered with the National Archives in Washington DC to celebrate "Big Strides, Diverse Paths: Women's Journeys to Political Leadership." The panel was moderated by Eleanor Clift, contributing Editor of Newsweek.
The McCormack Graduate School will be participating in a University wide charity event, GoKids24, putting together a 24 hour relay team for May 16th and 17th. Each participant in the relay will contribute $25 to GoKids and raise money from other sponsors if possible. We'll be running for 24 hours, but the special hours will be from 10:00 Saturday night to 6:00 Sunday morning: I'll be there then, and there will be refreshments! Please click here to join us for the relay. I'm delighted to report that our student applications are up this year by over 30%. We should have very strong applicant pools for next year's Ph.D., Masters and Certificate Programs. And we are negotiating with four new faculty members, and are proud of their scholarship, their intense interest in coming to UMass Boston, and their diversity.

Business, confidence indexes drop to new lows in Mass
The Daily News Transcript, March 4, 2009 Alan Clayton-Matthews, UMass Boston professor and economist, said the timing of an economic turnaround depends significantly on a restoration in confidence in the country's big financial institutions and a recovery in home prices. "It's possible when we see the third quarter (this year) that we might have hit bottom," Clayton-Matthews said, referring to a potential turnaround point in the economy. "But we won't know until we get there"
Market Meltdown Amplifies Baby Boomer Worries
The Boston Globe, March 1, 2009 While South Boston's neighborhood restaurants and bars seem relatively immune to the recession compared with other restaurants throughout the city, UMass Boston professor and economist Alan Clayton-Matthews warns against any cockiness. Statewide, the meal taxes collected in December 2008 were down 6.3 percent compared with December 2007. "I would be happy that my business had not gone down," Clayton-Matthews advises restaurant owners. "But I would also be worried about the future."
