Message from the Dean
Friends and Colleagues:
Now that I have two years as Dean under my belt, it has felt like it is time to undertake several important planning and organizational endeavors that are central to our College's growth. The Strategic Planning process you have heard about: in the next couple of days we will be distributing survey results, and an agenda for the school-wide strategic planning conversation that is scheduled for Tuesday October 14, from 4:30-6:30. I do hope you will be able to join us for this meeting. In addition- --We have a multi-college Task Force chaired by Jeff Burr, Associate Dean, that is thinking about how we might respond to the University's interest in having McCormack and UMass Boston extend our reach in global studies and research. This report will be delivered to the Provost, and reported to you, by the end of this semester. --We have a working group which consists of the entire tenured or tenure track faculty from McCormack undertaking to strengthen and systematize the process and standards for our tenure and promotion review. This discussion represents the absolutely core values of our college, and this work is central to being certain that we are truly committed to establishing an academic center of excellence in policy studies. This group will also be looking at a number of related issues, such as the student course and faculty evaluation process, and mentoring for our junior faculty. --Today at 4:00, in the Alumni Lounge of the Campus Center, we will be having our first ever formal convening of all MGS students, to discuss a number of issues, such as external policy initiatives led by MGS, and the academic honor code. We are growing (from a non-student headcount of 77 when I began to 115 now); we are learning-to wit, the work I described above; and we are making a significant impact on policy in our community and beyond-by new ventures like the Mature Worker Initiative, the Mass Ocean Partnership, the Commonwealth Compact, the Moakley Chair on Peace and Reconciliation, and the Edward J. Collins Center on Public Management; and by the continued outstanding work of our established Centers on Social Policy, Women in Politics and Public Policy, and Democracy and Development, as well as the Ethnic Newzwire and the Gerontology Institute. Part of the purpose of these updates is to encourage you to learn a little bit about all that we are doing, and to help you share in the excitement and energy of building a great new school. For political and public policy junkies, as most of us are, this has been an incredible election season. Watch the debate tonight, vote on November 4, and hope for a much better tomorrow.

"They really do have to be careful because there is such a problem today with girls and young women being pressed into early sexuality and early focus on weight and looks," said Hardy-Fanta.
Lessons from MA's Financial PastWBUR Boston News (September 30, 2008)Dean of the McCormack Graduate School Steve Crosby spoke with WBUR's Morning Edition's Bob Oakes about the revenue figures that Mass. lawmakers are expecting from Washington D.C. later this week. He commented about what these numbers will mean for the state's services and programs and how it will impact the state's economy. Click on the link above to listen to the interview.
The Jewish Advocate (September 29, 2008) Economist and professor of public policy Alan Clayton-Matthews spoke about the dynamics of the current economy and said the debate over the economy and the slumping job market is still not settled. "Some people would characterize this as a recession, others wouldn't," he said. "It depends on how you look at it. Even though we've had employment declines, some economists will say as long as output continues, it's not a recession. We also have an economy where part of it is working well and part of it isn't. Every time [the economy] runs into a problem like this, we learn a lesson. In another 10 years, there will be another big crisis." Click here for full stories | |
