Message from the Dean
Friends and Colleagues: I'm on vacation, but could not help drawing your attention to one of our College's most notable accomplishments. Padraig O'Malley, our Moakley Professor of Peace and Reconciliation, convened a third meeting of Iraqi leaders-Sunni, Shia and Kurds, this time in Baghdad. By all accounts, it was a significant breakthrough in the attempt to bring peace to this deeply troubled country. See the stories attached at MGS In The News. Padraig was ably supported by Nancy Riordan (MSPA-IR, '07) who was in Baghdad, and MGS staffer Pat Petersen, who attended the Helsinki II conference. This is precisely the kind of work Congressman Joe Moakley wanted us to do with the Chair in his memory, and an extension of the kind of work focused on issues of economic and social equity, and support of diversity that are becoming a hallmark of our school. And I'm pleased to report that both the Massachusetts House and Senate budgets have supported Governor Patrick's recommendation for a renewed Center on Public Management to be housed at MGS. More on this exciting project later, as it becomes formal. Meanwhile, Alison Gottlieb of the Gerontology Institute presented the Wisconsin Elder Economic Security Standard Index in three different cities in Wisconsin. The report and presentations were a huge success and were mentioned in many local newspaper articles, radio programs, and in a television news report. And the TJX Companies have joined the Commonwealth Compact. So much good work continues to be done. Hope you are enjoying a splendid summer, as I am.

VISIT TO MASSACHUSETTS OF THE LIBERIA WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT DELEGATION

From 2-14 June, 2008, a delegation of workforce development experts from the Republic of Liberia visited Massachusetts under a US Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs project awarded to the University of Massachusetts (Edmund Beard, Senior Advisor, Office of the UMass President and Director of the McCormack Graduate School Center for Democracy and Development, PI). The delegation consisted of:
- Mr. Mulbah S. Jackollie, Principal, Booker T. Washington Institute. Head of Delegation
- Ms. Vida H. Bracewell, Comptroller, the YMCA of Liberia.
- Ms. Tomaa Davis, Special Assistant to the Minister of Youth and Sports.
- Ms. Charlotte Evangelynn Kaicora, Administrative Assistant to the Pastor, Providence Baptist Church.
- Ms. Musu Sharon Kardamie, Chair, Concerned Women of Liberia Association.
- Mr. Francis N. Maweah, Chairman, Department of Rural Development, Cuttington University
For a snapshot of the Liberians itinerary the following is how they spent Wednesday, June 4. Met in AM at hotel by Edmund Beard. Walked to Massachusetts State House for full day's programming, arranged by Representatives Daniel Bosley (D. North Adams) and Byron Rushing (D. Boston). The delegation met with Speaker of the House Salvatore DiMasi, Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development Suzanne Bump, Senator Thomas McGee (Chair, Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development), Frank Callahan, President of the Massachusetts Building Trades Council, and representatives of Commonwealth Corporation, YOUTHBUILD, Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts, Mass Office of International Trade and Investment, and the YMCA. Lunch was provided in the Members Lounge. At the close of the day, the entire delegation was taken to the well of the House, during a live session, and introduced by name to the House Membership; at which time the delegation received an extended standing ovation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives. |
