Hello

I've been spending the past few weeks enjoying the awesome weather by walking the dogs at our summer cabin.  I know that snow is just around the corner, and I am not a snow person!

I'm trying to get my head around moving indoors after this beautiful fall.  I know that winter rains and wind are just around the corner.  While the weather is still mild it's time to think about what to cover, store, relocate and toss.  My tips below will help you think about that.

Wishing you well-organized spaces,

Shelly

GETTING ORGANIZED in 2011

Moving from Outdoors to Indoors for the Winter

The weather report shows possible rain next week!  They are even making snow in the Sierras for the ski season.  We've enjoyed a wonderful late summer and mild fall.  It's time to be serious about getting organized for life indoors so here are some tips for doing just that.

1. Purge seasonal clothes for storage, donation or toss

  • As you put away summer clothing, select items that you can donate or toss. Clean and repair the rest before storing in dust-free containers.
  • Keep like things together and label the containers for easy retrieval next summer.

2. Clean and prepare summer tools, furniture, and gear for winter storage

  • Just like clothing, the summer tools should be purged, repaired and cleaned prior to storage for the winter.
  • Cover furniture left out to the winter elements. Extra large garbage bags can adequately cover chairs or umbrellas.
  • If you store items in a shed be sure to keep "like with like". Put the gardening equipment in one area, the pool supplies in another. Label the shelves to make finding items easier.
  • Put containers that might leak in plastic tubs (labeled) and check the container for safe storage guidelines.
  • Many areas offer free disposal of hazardous materials (paint, pesticides, oil, etc.) Watch for these in your local paper and note the disposal date on your calendar.

3. Evaluate preparations needed for winter indoor living

  • As you are closing up the outside living, you need to evaluate the inside living as well. Assess and test your heating system, chimney pipe, propane tanks and connections. Now is the time to do maintenance before the service companies get busy.
  • Check smoke alarms and fire extinguishers. Replace batteries at the same time each year, whether they need it or not! Check level of fire extinguishers, recharge or buy new ones if necessary.
  • Bring out warm blankets and refresh by running through the dryer with a fabric softener sheet. If blankets were not cleaned before storage, now is the time to do that.
  • Purge any summer clutter that has gathered and make room for life indoors.

TOO MUCH STUFF

On Thursday evening, December 1st, I will be teaching a two-hour class called "Too Much Stuff".  This class is designed specifically for those who are ready to make decisions about what to keep and what to toss.  We will discuss the many options available locally to help you take the next step on exploring ways to honor, store, remove or repurpose those possessions.  I'll share my personal stories about too much stuff and give you a refresher on the five steps to reorganize your spaces.  You'll create an action plan to get you started.  If you've made a decision to reduce your clutter and want to know what the next step might be, this class will help.

To register for my class, go to: www.placeradultschool.org   Click on "Register for a Class" and type '4302100' in the search box at the top right of the screen, then follow instructions about adding the class to your online shopping cart.
