Happy Holidays  Gavin and Grammy at Christmas 2010

We had the best Christmas ever.  Seeing the holiday from the eyes of a 9-month-old put a whole new spin on the day.  Next year we will have two grand-babies around the tree.  I can hardly wait.

I did a really cool thing this year and I may just make it an annual event.  I finished all my shopping, wrapping, and decorating the weekend before Christmas.  I even washed all the holiday dishes and set them out - just tossed a sheet over the table.  I then met a long-time friend in Santa Cruz for four days of relaxation and renewal.  We read, slept and ate our way through the cloudy days at the beach.  You have to be pretty well organized ahead of time to do this so I hope my holiday tips have given you the head start for next year.

Looking forward to each and every day,

How to undecorate your tree and not regret it next year

Remove, Re-evaluate, and Re-pack
Sorting Ornaments

My friend Lesley shared her undecorating technique with me.  I think it is a perfect way to get ready for next Christmas.  Remove all ornaments from your tree and set them on a table.  It helps to sort them by type (ornaments, beads, garlands, etc.) Bring out your storage boxes and empty them as well if ornaments are still packed inside.  Go through all your ornaments, toss those that are broken or have lost their meaning.  Re-pack what remains.  I use zip-loc bags to keep similar ornaments together.  Leave a little air inside the bag and it acts as a packing cushion.  Here you see my tree ornaments sorted by color, small, and fragile.  I will put them in my ornament box for next year.  Note:  I keep the hooks on them when I put the away.

Remember the "OMF" box from last month's tips?  (Open Me First)

This is definitely the time for you to create your OMF box for 2011.  Think about what you needed first this year and put those items in the OMF box.  Gather up all the Christmas cards you received, put them in a zip-loc bag and label 2010 (keep envelopes with return addresses or create a mailing label list).  If you made any purchases of cards or decorations for next year, put them in the OMF box so you won't buy them again a year from now (if they won't fit, at least put a list of what you bought and where you stored it!)  If you said "Next year we should...." or "Next year let's not...." write that down on a note pad and put it in the OMF box.  You will thank me in 2011, I guarantee it!

The decorations "Gift Box" storage idea
This tip comes from an organizer friend.  When you take down the ornaments this year, store them in a decorated gift box (wrapped so the lid will come off).  Next year, open the decorated box, place the ornaments on the tree, and leave the empty box under the tree until it's time to take them down again.  This leaves your tree looking festive even after all the gifts have been opened.  Of course, if you want it to appear that Santa made an extended stop at your place, create different boxes for all your decorations.  One can never look at too many wrapped boxes under the tree!
