This is the best time of year to purchase storage containers. Back-to-school sales have great deals on everything to contain your stuff. Look in Target, K-Mart, CVS, Sams Club, Costco, Bed Bath & Beyond, Office Depot, craft and sporting stores and more. This time of year you can find excellent storage containers for about $5-$8 each.
Five Things to Consider About Containers
Select the right container
Always go for see-through containers with tight fitting flat lids suitable for stacking. Avoid lids that have bulky latches, hinges or interlocking split halves. Use heavy duty containers for frequently accessed storage. If you must buy colored, opaque containers, use the same color for similar storage items (such as red for Christmas, blue for beach toys).
Label containers for visibility
With clear containers you can put your label on the inside, facing out. Label on at least two sides; turn and stack so the label can be seen. Outside labels should be securely taped to the sides, or use permanent marker in large print. Don't label the top! It might help to have a detailed list of contents placed inside for future reference. What does "kids stuff" mean exactly?
Measure all around
Containers come in many sizes so measure your shelving BEFORE you make any purchases. Be sure to measure the shelf depth as well as height and length. Be cognizant of containers with sloping sides. The top may not be the same as the bottom - use the largest dimension when figuring best use of shelf space.
Maximize space
Sometimes combining different types of containers on a shelf will maximize your usable space. Two long thin containers stacked on top of each other might fit best. Deep shelves could hold smaller items in front of larger containers pushed to the back. Smaller containers can be stacked in deep drawers.
Watch the weight
Heavy containers should be placed low where easily reached and lifted out. Freestanding shelves should be secured to walls to avoid tipping or collapsing. Pack heavy items in the bottom of your container and limit stacking to two or three containers depending on weight. Always think safety first.
