Spring Greetings ,
Looking at my house through the cherry tree blossoms reminds me of my grandmother. You see I live in a 100+ year old home that my grandparents bought in the early 1900's. This tree always blooms around Easter and brings promises of Spring blessings. However, there are still a few more rainy days ahead before we move outdoors. This issue gives you some suggestions on what to do during those days when the weather keeps you indoors.

PERSONAL CHALLENGE - Get Organized in 2009 |
|
|
NEW - ORGANIZING CALENDAR FOR 2009
Each month I will share three things to do that will help you get organized in 2009. You can choose to do one or more of my suggestions, or come up with your own.
April - Explore the Black Hole (Where stuff gets lost!)
1. Create a family communication center
-
Choose an area in your home where the family will place all phone messages, notes, and action items. Usually this is near the telephone, in the kitchen, entry hall or family room.
Get a container where you will keep pencils, pens, tape, paper clips, scissors, and note paper. A two or three drawer desktop unit works well for this.
- Designate where all phone messages and important communications will be placed. You might use a magnetic board, basket, or countertop sorter for this. Getting input from everyone in the family will help make this system work.
2. Evaluate where things pile up and collect
- Look at places in your home or office where things tend to pile up. Evaluate what items collect in this spot (mail, books, clothes, homework?) Think about why this happens. Is there something you can change in your routine that will minimize the pile up?
Many times things pile up because they do not have a designated home. Find a home for these items. If necessary, contain the piles where they tend to land until you find time to put the items away (use baskets, bowls, drawers). Just remember to put them away! 3. Look in the back of your pantry or refrigerator
- A rainy day is a good time clean out the back of your pantry or refrigerator. Try to do this on the day before garbage pick up!
- Remove all outdated, spoiled or half-used food.
- If you have many duplicates of stable shelf items, consider donating some to food banks.
- Organized your pantry shelves by food type (like the grocery store does). Label the shelves to make restocking and finding items easier. It is amazing how well this helps others in the family to find and put away food items.
Use small plastic baskets to contain similar food packages like spices, pastas, fruits, or soups. Small baskets with side holes work well in refrigerators and freezers. Be sure to label the baskets.

Organizing can be fun, especially when you gather your friends for a "PICTURE YOURSELF ORGANIZED" HOME PARTY! You and your guests will learn simple organizing principles that can be applied to any area of the home or office. In addition, everyone will receive a "Picture Yourself Organized" binder full of worksheets, tips, and valuable information. GOOD TIPS, READS & LEADS |

Solutions to the Black Hole collections
Every home has places where things tend to pile up; shoes in the bedroom, mail on the kitchen counter, leftovers in the refrigerator, magazines on the floor. This is a good time of year to search for these "black holes" where things collect and sometimes disappear. Usually the solution may be as simple as some sort of container; make sure your containers work for you and your stuff. Here are some ideas from a recent Lillian Vernon gift catalog (one of my personal favorites): To hold the things that collect in your car, try this seat organizer or hanger hooks:
To contain items on your desk or countertop, try a wicker basket or storage drawers:
To keep magazines or other media under control, try a covered stool on wheels:

AUBURN HOME SHOW - MAY 15 - 17
The Auburn Spring Home Show is coming in May. Mark your calendar now for this great place to catch new ideas for your organizing needs.
SHRED - SHRED - SHRED - SHRED - SHRED
Now I know many of you take the time to shred your personal papers using a small desk-side shredder. Don't you wish you could dump it all at once and not worry about it? Well now you can. I have contracted with Absolute Secured Shredding Inc. of Fair Oaks to provide a secure shred bin at my home office for clients and friends. If you would like to feed my hungry bin you may do so at my home (any amount of papers, anytime for $10/month). Absolute Secure Shredding will come by my home each month and shred the contents on-site. Contact me if you are interest in sharing my bin. I might even provide coffee or a snack!
