Greetings!

I am so excited to finally get my home office in order after a shopping spree at IKEA (the Mother Ship for Organizers).  My filing had been backing up until I acquired the appropriate shelving.  Since I tend to "pile file" I purchased some cubical type bookshelves to hold my projects.    Details by Shelly

This works great for me because each cubical is designated for a different purpose.  Thus, piles turn into files!  I don't pretend it's like Martha Stewart, but I can find what I want within 90 seconds.  Remember that beauty is in the eye of the beholder...a beautiful file system is what works for the user.

TIPS & TRICKS
I cannot emphasize enough how critical it is to get the right containers for your stuff.  How do you know what to get?  First you have to know how much "stuff" you have.  When it comes to working files, I use these "Folder Holders" by Fellowes for sorting files, holding temporary projects, storing long term files on the shelves or placing in my file cabinets  (they are made to fit inside the file drawers).   Details by Shelly

I even use them inside my soft-sided carryalls to give them structure and hold documents for meetings with clients.  These are hard to find in stores.  Sometimes I can find them at Office Depot or Office Max.  I once found them at Fry's (go figure!).  If you can't find them locally, they can be ordered on-line and cost anywhere from $5-$8 for a set of two, so shop around.
PERSONAL CHALLENGE
Got piles of files sitting around????  Set aside 5 minutes each day for a week to go through the papers.  Gather up what you have into piles no higher than 6 inches.  Pull out the large items first and put them away or toss.  Then go through what's left over and quickly sort as action or file; tossing as much as you can.  Set the action items on your desk to deal with; file the rest.

GOOD READS & LEADS

I ran across a book that makes sorting and organizing your files simple.  In fact, most of the concepts in this book were the same ones I used during my 30 years of office management.  It's easy to read and has a system that is a hybrid between the numeric and alpha methods.  Very adaptable.  Check it out...
