One of my favorite aspects of nutrition is the power of foods to heal the body. From healing the gut of digestive issues, clearing up acne and eczema to riding the body of cancer, what we put into our body is extremely powerful. Hippocrates, one of the great founders of medicine, famously remarked "Let food be thy medicine, and medicine be thy food." It is with this statement that societies have been using food to heal the body for centuries. Unfortunately, in America many of us overlook this powerful tool.
In studying the healthiest diets from around the world, people like Dr. Daphne Miller have discovered one of the most beneficial food groups to heal the body - fermented foods.
Fermented foods, containing lacto-bacillus (Acidophilus), provide "good bacteria" to the gut, helping to ease digestion, enhance immunity (think no more sick days) and decrease inflammation in the body. In addition, fermented foods provide enzymes that help to better absorb minerals, vitamins and nutrients. Fermented foods are particularly important for those who have taken antibiotics over the years or who have sensitive stomachs.
New research is just beginning to show the benefits- something that traditional cultures have instinctively known for centuries. One way to start adding in more healing foods to your diet, is to include fermented foods such as miso, tempeh, sauerkraut, kombucha, kimchi and cultured veggie. You can find these fermented foods in the refrigerator section of your health food store.
In the upcoming newsletters I will be introducing more foods that heal the body and are known to be a key element of the healthiest diets from around the world...stay tuned.
