Great Speaking Engagements
Are Based on a Partnership

If you're an author, business leader, or non-profit director who pursues public speaking, keep in mind that great speaking engagements are based on a partnership mentality. That's because the best speaking engagements usually take place when the speaker and the event leader mutually respect each other. There's a reason why you want to negotiate a fair fee, rather than accept anything you can get in desperation. The value that you can provide needs to be matched by the organization's desire to have you present. This balance of equal respect is known as a partnership, where each party mutually esteems the other.

During your initial conversation, treat the inquiring leader with respect. But, test the waters to see if they're willing to appreciate your needs for a fair fee and an environment that's conducive for professional speaking. Ask the leader questions, such as:

  • What problems or needs of your group can I help meet?
  • Are there specific issues that you'd like for me to cover?
  • What could I do that would make you the happiest?
  • What steps are you taking to market this event in the community?
  • If I have specific audio / visual / microphone needs, can you accommodate my requests?
  • Will I be permitted to sell my books or products to the audience?
  • Can you record my presentation and provide me with a copy?
  • Who have you booked in the past for this type of event? (It's okay to take any names given and contact those individuals for a reference if an event sounds sketchy.)

Gauge the leader's answers to your questions to determine if he or she shows a sincere interest in your needs. A partnership is a two-way street with mutual give and take. Avoid a one-sided scenario where you must meet all of their requests without getting assistance on issues that are important to you.

When someone is willing to partner with you, there should be an overall feeling of cooperation and admiration. Show the leader your willingness to help his or her organization, and expect the same level of treatment regarding your presentation and your fee.

Two authors coached by Rob Eagar, president of WildFire Marketing, achieved a rare back-to-back publishing accomplishment. In the past 30 days, Wanda Brunstetter and Lysa TerKeurst both hit the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists with new books in 2012, which added to their bestselling books in 2011. Brunstetter achieved a three-peat with her novels, The Journey and The Healing in 2011 and The Struggle in 2012. TerKeurst achieved repeat success with her non-fiction titles, Made to Crave in 2011 and Unglued in 2012.
