Editor.....Gujarat Media Club
Gujarat Media Club had its third Foundation Day last Saturday. 12 veteran journalists were felicitated at a function in a leading club in Ahmedabad. It had all glitter and glamour of a club. However, like in all previous functions thin presence of members of the club was conspicuous and also the lack of sincerity and commitment to the spirit of felicitation of veterans. No doubt these veterans have had something to contribute to the profession. But the rationale of selection is still a mystery. Many much more powerful have been left out. Probably, identity crisis ridden GMC wanted to catch attention of the peers in the community by catch all and please all strategy. Veteran after veteran was introduced by Club leaders with great enthusiasm. Almost all forgot the time limit of two minute brief. But there was not even a second for the response of these veterans to their felicitation. I think the GMC has achieved a distinction that can get it a place in some kind of record with title "A cool Felicitation". We find these veterans in their seventies and eighties worth felicitating, but we could not find even a second in our fluid schedule for a word of "Thank You" or a piece of advice by our veterans. We described them as shapers of journalism and journalists in Gujarat without giving them any chance to utter even a word. This is more than an organizational lapse. It is a case of GMC piggy riding seniors to achieve some kind of identity without even having courtesy of allowing the veterans to express themselves. Sadashiv Pathak represents the pre independence days when Ahmedabad was covered by four journalists only and he learnt journalism from Great Gujarati writer and activist Jhaverchand Meghani. Tushar Bhatt and Ramu Patel are among pillars of English Journalism of their time and are still known for their pen. Ramu Patel had mooted the idea of Press Club long back. He could have shared his experience with members. Bhupat Vadodaria was not present. His son Kiran Vadodaria had come. Bhupatbhai is a versatile pen with regular columns in newspapers and several books to his credit. He has very simple interesting language, which is rare today. These and other journalists could have given some piece of advice to budding journalists to shape themselves as a better journalist standing out in the growing crowd of media. Many of these veterans were seen moving round alone or with their family members during dinner after the felicitation. At least some office bearers could be assigned responsibility of taking care of our elders. The function had presence of over half a dozen IAS officers. Even the press note of GMC has mentioned the names of these officers very prominently. Certainly, it is a good idea for creating a brand. But whose brand was being created is a question?
Have a happy reading.
With love

Modern Times of Journalism
GMC organizers are happy that they have good coverage of their foundation day in Ahmedabad newspapers. Friends good coverage is quite subjective. A newspaper has given a big photograph with small caption which does not tell what had happened in the function was held. One very veteran newspaper had headline Gujarat Media Club honours veteran journalists. It talks about the greatness of these veteran journalists and has long coverage of the speech of the incoming President. But the two column item gave no idea about who these 12 veteran shapers of journalism and journalists are. No names. Interestingly, senior editorial staff of the newspaper is very enthusiastic about the club activities as they dined and danced at the function. So what will you call it, misleading-mischievous, mysterious or mindless headline of Modern Times?
GMC PR Titbits
When a function of an organization is turned into event a lot takes place by way of PR work right from writing press notes to follow up action. The GMC function was no exception. With all media and PR men involved in it , GMC had no problem of technical Human Resources for it. And, we had press release of the event next day. Naturally function had continued around midnight. There was no photograph. It was sent past 11 pm. Friends forgot caption!!! The press note had the speech of the incoming President, but nothing about the speech of the outgoing President. This enthusiasm for the new was corrected after two days. But our poor outgoing president Manasda had missed the bus. If it were any government or political function (we do not touch our cash bulls the private parties in our criticism), newspapers would have blasted the organizers with all kind of box items for such blunders. Thanks god hardly anyone writes about us seriously.
IAS centric PR The GMC function had more than half a dozen senior IAS officers. Some of them are quite powerful in decision making in the CMO. And our friends were quite happy to see the battery of IAS in their function. Representatives from the PR world had a good opportunity to have refreshing meetings with their prospective clients! One PR man is said to be trying to sabotage GMC activities as his big PR brother plays a big role in GMC activities. It is a question of getting big pie of government business!!!
Three media men in election battle in Gujarat
Journalists joining politics is not news. Many are with politics without formally joining a party. Generally, our friends prefer Rajya Sabha route like Rajiv Shukla and others. Not many opt for the real battle for ballot. However, this time Gujarat has three media men in the race for people's power. Two are on BJP ticket while is Congress candidate. BJP has chosen Deepak Sathi who is owner of Naya Padkar newspaper of central Gujarat and CR Patil who till recently owned Surat based daily Navgujarat Times. He is said to have sold his newspaper recently. Congress candidate Aziz Tankarvi is a writer turned editor. He runs the show of Gujarati daily Gujarat Today, a newspaper run by Muslim trust to represent voice of Muslims in Gujarat.
Mistry ban gaya spokesperson
Rajendra Mistry self styled media man and occultist, two in one, is very happy. He has got a letter of appointment as spokesperson of the SP in Gujarat. He does PR work for NCP also. But that is on personal basis because of relations with one of the NCP leaders, he explains. Mistry who has had a long drawn battle with Gujarati Jansatta has been associated with some local papers, but probably this new assignment is the first with appointment letter. | |

GMC struggling for identity
- By Yogesh Sharma
There was not even a single nomination for elections of office bearer Wafer thin attendance of members at GMC programmes
These facts are enough to indicate the situation of the Gujarat Media Club which has been styled like any other Club under the Companies Act. Last Saturday the Club had its Third Foundation Day. In last one year, the Club's quite active secretary general Sanjay Pande organized more than 13 events. If there was anything common in these programmes that was wafer thin attendance. Yes there were two or three events which had relatively better situation. One of those was Meet the Press with Rajat Sharma. Reason is not to be told. Cricket Tournament of the GMC with the sponsorship of IOC is being developed as second important get together day of the members after the Foundation Day. But this year it was the most lack luster event. Attendance of both members and guests was very poor. Elections this time was the culmination of the apathy of members. Not even a single nomination was filed for the elections of the office bearers for 2009-10. Ultimately, it is after much persuasive consultation by some that the present team has taken over. The new President Uday Mahurkar admits that he was not willing. But once I have accepted the assignment, I will work whole heartedly, he asserts. Successive teams of office bearers feel that this situation is just because the Club does not have its own office. Some blame this on Ahmedabad being dry! However, the main issue is that members have paid Rs 5,000 each as membership fee and they pay yearly fee also and still they are so indifferent to the Club. Initially Club had a tie up with a restaurant for good stuff at reasonable price for its members and unlimited gup shup session facility. Two three office bearers used to sit there to give a kick start to the project. But it did not work. One fine day, members got information about rented office of GMC in the western part of Ahmedabad with cyber facility and some ready refreshments. Of course it was on payment. Except two three photographers, hardly anyone visited the place. This year in January, members got their membership cards at a function of GMC. Not many realized that this was because the GMC had closed down the rented office and shifted to Gandhinagar where one of its pioneers R K Mishra provided office facility. Club members do not take much interest in the activities and office bearers find it difficult to contact members and to encourage them for participation in the Club activities. The result is chaotic lack of communication between the leaders of the years and members forever. Ultimate sufferer is the Club which has yet to establish its identity. Though Club is Ahmedabad based, not many journalists are aware of it. Even among those who have heard about it, some still think it to be a club of English Newspaper journalists and channel media persons. In its desperate attempt to make its presence felt, the GMC has tried some activities to mobilize journalists. It held demonstrations when police tried to stop entry of journalists in police headquarters in Gandhinagar. Later, some of GMC leaders took the banner of protest march against Godman Asaram for attack on Journalist. In this case again the focus was channel reporters. Recently, some of GMC stalwarts organized a programme to protest the murder of a Pakistani journalist. Some even communicated about it to the bosses of GEO in Pakistan and they in turn appreciated the move. This has raised questions about the role of GMC. In Ahmedabad some newspapers have closed down. Some have retrenched staff. However, GMC is mum. But in other cases, its promoters are going ga ga! The third Foundation Day programme was yet another example of this search for identity. The Club decided to honour 12 veterans. On what basis these journalists were selected is being hotly discussed by many veterans who are left out.
New Team of GMC
Uday Mahurkar of India Today is the President of the team for 2009-10. As per the constitution of the GMC, every year new office bearers are elected. This year there was no nomination for any post of the Gujarat Media Club. Consequently, new team has been formed on the basis of persuasive consultation. No formality of any kind of election. Manas Dasputa of The Hindu is the outgoing president of the GMC. Functionally, Secretary General of the Club is all powerful and the new person on this post is Nirnay Kapoor of India TV. Other office bearers are Ajay Umat of Divya Bhaskar Sr. Vice President, Bharat Desai of Times of India and Brajesh Kumar Singh of STAR News are vice-Presidents and Neha Amin of Gujaratglobal.com is Secretary Binu Alex of Commodityonline.com and Dakshesh Pathak of Gujarat Samachar are Jt. Secretaries and Shailesh Raval of India Today is the Treasurer.
Felicitation of veteran Journalists
On the Third Foundation Day, GMC felicitated one dozen veteran journalists. They have been given honorary membership of the Club. These journalists are: Sadashiv Pathak , Labhshankar Upadhyay , Zaverilal Mehta, Akhil Hussain , Varanasi Ramamurthy, Tushar Bhatt , M V S Pasupathinath, Ashraff Saiyed , Amin Kureshi , Bhupathbhai C Vadodaria, Ramubhai Patel and Umesh Narian.
New faces in Indian Women Press Corps elections
It was quite unusual in the elections of Indian Women Press Corps (IWPC) this year. All posts of office bearers were not filled by understanding among what is called ruling clique of the club. There was election for only post. It was the post of Joint Secretary. Quite a new face Sonal Kellog defeated Geeta Shree who had gone to Syria. Geeta Shree is with the Club for a very long time while Kellog is quite a new entrant (Only three years) Even last year Sonal had contested for the same post. But she had lost. Her rival Mandira Nair, granddaughter of Kuldip Nayar had won. In the first year, Sonal had fought for the Managing Committee and won it. Last year, she tried for the Committee and post of Jt. Secretary. She won the committee membership, but lost office bearer elections. This time she contested for both, committee and the post of joint secretary and won both. Sonal who was with Asian Age is now with Hard News. But for the election purpose her category was of freelance. This election saw emergence of some more new faces in the club having elitist image. Karuna Madan who had created storm in the elections of Press Club of India could make a successful maiden entry in Managing Committee of the Indian Women Press Corps (IWPC). She had lost in PCI. Ravinder Bawa and Madhvi Gupta are also first timer in the 21 member committee. The new team is headed by Neerja Chowdhury of Indian Express who is elected President. TK Rajalakshmi is General Secretary. Navika Kumar of Times Now is Treasurer, Manjari Chaturvedi of Navbharat Times and Aruna Singh of Sadhna News are Vice-Presidents of the IWPC. All of these posts have candidates unopposed. For the 21-member executive committee, as many as 29 candidates were in the fray. The newly-elected executive committee members are Gargi Parsai (The Hindu), Shushma Rama Chandran (Freelance), Neelam Jeena (Andhra Prabha), Annapurna Jha (UNI), Anita Katyal (Tribune), Jyoti Malhotra (Freelance), Ira Jha (Freelance), Parul Sharma (Jansatta), Saroj Nagi (Hindustan Times), Kalyani Shankar (Freelance), Ritu Sarin (Indian Express), Shubha Singh (Freelance), Karuna Madan (Freelance), Kumkum Chadha (Hindustan Times), Shanta Sarabjeet Singh (Art Critic), Rashmi Sehgal and Narayani Ganesh (The Times of India), Madhvii Gupta (Freelance), Vimal Issar (Freelance), Ravinder Bawa (Aajtak), and Mannika Chopra (Freelance).
