Editor..... Electronic media regulation
Recently, there was a move to regulate electronic media and there was lot of hue and cry over the issue. Prime Minister intervened and said the media would be taken into confidence before brining any kind of regulation. However, this has not settled the controversial and much talked issue of regulating the new media which has grown tremendously in a short span of a decade or so. Can we work with self regulation? I do not think that the issue of regulation should be left to the media when it involves sensitive issues like personal liberty of people and national security. We have well defined laws that govern print media. Still there is a growing feeling that they are not enough. In this world of growing competition and commercialization where a newspaper or a channel is a product, it is difficult to ensure that people will not be tempted to find ways to evade self regulation. This debate has a positive angle also. It has given some kind of identity to the electronic media. I hope government would evolve some kind mechanism that will give shape to the fast growing world of broadcasters. Have A Happy Reading.
With love

Media Masalaa
Recently Modi had an interaction with media . It was a kind of curtain raiser about Global Investors' Summit 2009. Modi was all praise for what he described as pro active media. He said that media which had doubt at the time of the first Summit was all for the Summit. Now media is coming forth to write more and more about the Summit.
It was a different Modi. His love for "new media" was quite unbelievable.
But at the Summit, it was a different story. He did not bash media, something which is very natural to his enchanting oratory. But he did not praise media either. There was no mention of the media in his speeches except when he asked cameramen to sit down or when he released figures of MOUs signed at the Summit.
His pro active spirit for pro active media had vanished like many of the MOUs at the Summit. MOU can disappear anytime as the Summits have shown
Times of India had a piece of advice for industrialists who had praised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at the valedictory function of the Summit. They should not go overboard . These industrialists should have thought about other chief ministers like Nitish Kumar.
A Gujarat based industrialist remarked that the edit writer probably does not read his own newspaper.
Everyone calls him Dixit. Hardly anyone in the media knows his full name, Naresh Dixit. His youthful appearance does not betray his age of 52. His body language carries aura of an officer. Not many in the media know his post. He is a dispatch rider with the department.
But whenever there is an important function, he is the most sought after person. Officers of his department find in him a good way to get rid of the arduous task of managing media. For media, he is the most easily accessible person from the Department at the time of crisis. Whether it is to clear the passage for media in security arrangements or to make sitting arrangement for them, Dixit is always willingly ready for the thankless job.
During the Global Investors' Summit, it was Dixit who saw that media persons got place to sit in the area reserved for media. He even fought with many who tried to get into the reserved area. While many of the officers on media duty disappeared in thin air in the thick of crisis facing media men, guide Dixit was always in the visible range.
But for the Department he is just a class four dispatch rider!

Global Ginglish Showcasing Summit 2009
The Global Investors' Summit 2009 showcased advantage Gujarat at a global platform in quite enviable way. Industry and Indian polity all are abuzz with the controversies the Summit has generated, whether it is claim of investment to come or Modi as the CEO of India. However, Modi and his ministers became victim of what can be called stage fright during the awe inspiring stage show at the two day summit. Modi shocked the audience when he said that he was pessimistic. However, later he had right expression, optimistic. Modi, an orator par excellence, was quick enough to oscillate between Hindi and English and kept the audience spellbound by his rhymes and creation of expressions like RACE. Revenue Minister Anandiben Patel had "hardly" welcome of the guest and had Chief Secretary Rajgopalan had several slips in his speech. But a daily midloid publication about the Summit was a hilarious comedy of mistakes and showcased Gujarat's weakness (English Language) to thousands of delegates and visitors as it was distributed free. Here are some examples. Lead story has first few paras like this, "Lothal (Gujarat), a remarkable spot for trade in the Harappan civilization, and Gujarat of modern India is know for the trade. WE the people of Gujarat are basically known as the traders in the world. In other words we always look for our share or brokerage. But now we did't remain the same people of Gujarat but became manufacturer and the world knows it very well. Over the last few years in Indian economy, Gujarat has the remarkable contribution. Gujarat is the factory of India's best entrepreneur and managers. Business is in the blood of Gujarati. And physical geography facilitated to the people of Gujarat as Gujarat has outstanding infrastructure, that includes strategic location, ports, longest coastline, road and rail network well as pro-active government and business- savvy population making a perfect ground for business to flourish and nourish. And now Gujarat is not legged behind to anyone thanks to its industrial friendly facilities that makes the state a perfect destination for investment" Here is a piece from another item. It begins with this, "No industrialist wants to close down hisa business. What does he wants? He wants to maintain global competitiveness. For which he has to get into low-cost manufacturing. If we can provide that environment, we can do it. India can give both low cost and high efficiency and this will an answer to global recession opined Chief Minister Mr. Narendra Modi during a recent interaction with media." One more. A complete item. "More than two thousand delegates are participating in fourth Global Vibrant Summit to be held on 12-13 January. To cop up with the language problem Gujarat Government has prepared a software in Six different language to enable the foreign delegate understand the address of different dignitaries. This software has prepared in such a manner that foreign delegates, if desire, can listen the addressin their mother tongue too.In order to facilitate the foreign delegates, Gujarat Government has prepared this software in languages like, Russian, Japanese, Italian and Chinese. Moreover government has also takes a special care for the delegates who know neither Gujarati nor Hindi. People from Russia, China and Japan generally opt to their local language. From the past experience Government has learnt a positive lesson and made such an arrangement. This facility has set up at all three hall of Science City". So what will you call it? GINGLISH |

Bunty-Bubli story of Saputara Media Centre
Last week newspapers of South Gujarat had a news item about foundation laying function of media centre at hill station Saputara in the Dangs district of Gujarat. It was shocking news for all right from the Collector of Dangs to the Information Department which had planned this media centre. None knew about the function. There was no invitation to anyone concerned. Yes, media of the Dangs was invited to cover the function. Agriculture Minister Dilip Sanghani presided over the function. The entire show was arranged by a sub-contractor Ghanshyam Patel, a local leader of the ruling BJP. None could ask Sanghani about the event. The venue is just next to the ST bus stand. The contractor has a very innovative explanation. He told authorities that work was pending for years and to start it, he thought that there should be "Khaat Mahurt". But, it is a fact that the work on the project began in September last year. What has shell shocked the district administration and the Information Department that this event was reserved for the Chief Minister as part of the Swarnim Gujarat project. However, the Chief Minister could not spare time for this Rs.85 lakh project. For the last four days, Deputy Director of Information Nikhilesh Upadhyay has sleepless nights. He is said to have written a letter to the Collector, Anupam, that the Information Department was neither involved nor aware of this function. He already had a hard time explaining the entire episode to the Commissioner of Information Bhagyesh Jha who was fretting and fuming reading about the blunder. Sanghani had gone to the hill station for his marriage anniversary celebrations. He had stayed in the government Rest House and had a party in the famous log hut of the Forest Department. When the sub-contractor, local BJP leader, asked Sanghani to honour the event, he was all happy to celebrate the marriage anniversary in this creative way, something in annals of Gujarat to remember his marriage anniversary. Poor Sanghani had little idea that his party worker had opened a hilly track for him at the hill station.

Divya Bhaskar Surat with Hindi page
From January 15, Divya Bhaskar from Surat has a page in Hindi and the initial response of the experiment is very encouraging according to a senior management source. The page caters to migrants with news from their states.
Surat, the diamond city, has maximum migrant population in Gujarat. This has led to flourishing business of Hindi newspapers. Hindi daily Loktej by a Journalist is an excellent example of the growing Hindi readership in this city. Rajasthan Patrika has a better business profile in Surat as compared to Ahmedabad.
Taking a cue from the success of Hindi newspapers here, Bhaskar has started with one page in Hindi in its Surat edition. This is like Gandhidham experiment where Bhaskar launched a Hindi publication under the banner of DB gold. Gandhidham with Kandla port as a satellite town and growing business community of north Indians has a good Hindi readership. This is reflected in the success of the Bhaskar venture in the Kutch district.
Kutchvatan.com
This week Kutchcentric website Kutchvatan was launched at a small function in Mandvi town. The website in English and Gujarati is an excellent example of a niche website with a sharp focus on genuine creative content about the district, second largest district in India.
It is a good database about Kutch and offers a glimpse to the viewer about the Kutch of post 2001 earthquake. Some of columns are still under development, but the visual appeal of the site and creativity of its content management is sign of professional approach of its promoter Devendra Vyas, himself from the traditional print media. |
