Editor.....Ban Live Terror Reporting
Entire nation is talking about the 62 hour terror ordeal of Mumbai. However, there was a parallel terror ordeal of media particularly live reporting by channels driven by the mad race for the first. In the process what these channels have done has not only affected anti-terrorist operations but also caused social tension. Terrorists are always equipped with latest state of art tools of communication. Popular film Wednesday showed it very well. Today anyone can have variety of information on his mobile. What is shameful is that the channels are indulging in these dirty games, even after the anti-terrorist operation is over. The question is whether there is any utility of the live reporting. The answer is no. On the contrary the so called live reporting became a big source of churning out rumors. Like the TV screen, these live telecasts were flat. The third dimension was missing. No channel is exception. None could be. It is just because, they were shooting from a distance and there was no coordination between what was shown and what was happening. In the interest of the country and such operations, live reporting and photography of action scenes should be banned. Guidelines by the government or organisations like NBA make no sense in reality. Periodic release of news of operations can serve the purpose of informing people about the happening. The issue revolves round Mumbai tragedy in media. Other major topic this time is the lay off by newspapers. Besides, there is regular stuff.
Have A Happy Reading.
With love

Media Masalaa
Bapu can't do ...
Last week Union Textile Minister Shankarsinh had another round of press conference in Ahmedabad. More than 100 journalists turned up the media meet of Vaghela who is popularly called bapu by both friends and foes. Bapu is quite popular in the media. Both for witty earthly remarks in colloquial Gujarati and the gift he offers. This time journalists were surprised that there was everything of Bapu touch, but not gift. Some thought that Bapu will arrange distribution later. There were many who straightway asked Bapu's confidents about the gift. They were not ready to believe that Bapu can have a dry PC( Gujarat is already a dry state, but Bapu lubricates his media contacts more generously than many others through costly gifts!) . But the fact is there was no gift this time. Girish Parmar and Dinesh Patel who are known to be associated with Bapu for his media arrangements here had a tough time explaining to journalists. What is more that five journalists complained to Bapu about blunder in the gift distribution last time. That PC had 225 plus Mediamen. Special arrangements were made to distribute gift. It so happened that there was shortage of three gifts. Organisers had an innovative idea. They opened the gift bag. Took out bed sheet packet and gave bag to one and bed sheet to another! Bapu told his men to settle these problems when affected journalists took up the issue after his PC. Vyasjee ki syndicate
Funerals are great socializing events. Soon after some formal tribute exchange programme about departed souls, people come down to very mundane affairs. A gathering at the funeral of former Gujarat Chief Minister Chhabildas Mehta was no exception. Health and Tourism Minister Jay Narayan Vyas who is also Modi government's spokespersons had a very meaningful dialogue with Jayantilal Parmar from the spokesmen team of the Congress. When he described Parmar his counterpart, quick witted Parmar pointed out the difference. I represent party and you, the Government. Vyas quickly diverted the topic saying that Jayantilal you are very popular among journalists for your SMS. It is a fact and I had a long piece on this aspect of Jayantilal's personality in one of my newsletters. Jayantilal came up with a very political explanation. I have only Speaker of the State Assembly, Ashok Bhatt, in my SMS list. None from the BJP or BJP government, Jayantilal said. You can SMS me on my personal number, suggested the government spokesperson Vyas. While Jayantilal who had never met Jaynarayan earlier was wondering about the maneuvers of Jay Narayan, Jay Narayan left the place. Within two ours Jay Narayan received SMS from Jayantilal that Shivraj Patil resigns. Vyas flashed a thanks message to Jayantilal. Our Vyasji has one more channel of information to do his job of government spokesperson of reacting to all kind of issues under the Sun. So friends, like us our Vyasji also a syndicate with the rival!!!!! Rajat Sharma in his own TRP trap
All channels acted like TRP maniac and our friend Rajat Sharma was also in the race in his own Extra Terristorial way. But Rajat Sharma and his team had no idea that telecast of conversation with terrorist will invite government notice to India TV. The channel has developed a singular identity of showing bizarre things brazenly. However, Rajat considers all this as TRP tools. When his team applied it to the reporting of Mumbai terror, Information and Broadcasting Ministry slapped a notice to India TV with time to reply till December 1. His TRP booster did not work with the audience while it has put him in the dock. Rajat must be expecting something ET to bail him out.

The Dirty Game the Channels Played
-Yogesh Sharma
A national Commando is shaking hands with a state commando. This is possibly a sign of anti terrorist operation getting over. The two commandoes might be old friends shaking hands. This is how a channel described shaking hands of two commandos. You can see the body of a terrorist tumbling out of a window. There was a slow motion action of the tumbling down re run several times. It was basically a body being thrown out of the window. Almost every channel talked about the body language of the commandoes with the interpretation that this shows that they are relaxed because the operation seemed to be successful. These are among the numerous instances which show that what these channels offered to its viewers was a coloured shit. Much more damaging were other cases which are still continuing. All channels had their quota of misinformation and rumors. Almost all were instrumental in spreading rumor that a terrorist entered the Chatrrapati Shivaji Terminal firing indiscriminately.
On the last day of the tele drama , a senior editor of a channel kept on shouting that NSG had its own limitation, but he vouched that there was one injured terrorist in Taj. This was soon after the press conference of DG of NSG.
Was it not sabotaging the operations just to show oneself smarter than others. Till the date this editor has not been able to produce the injured terrorist on the screen. On Sunday one channel said that 15 had come, but the state government had accounted for ten only. Using all his histrionic skills the anchor kept on shouting where are these five terrorists? Why government is telling lies? The authority with which channels spread canards is astounding. On one channel came emotionally chocked voice that there is a very bad news. We cannot help it is a very bad news. After a heavy doze of phrase very bad news, the announcer referred to the reporter who said that none survived in the Tiffin restaurant. All were killed and this would increase the death toll terribly, he further said. Even small children were killed. I do not know what happened ultimately to the Tiffin Tragedy. It took several hours before the reporters realised that all explosions were not the work of terrorists. In many cases army diffused explosive which caused the sound. This showed that our channels did not have trained team which knew the basics of terrorist operations. And these persons are not missing any chance, or I should say creating opportunities, to censor authorities, to editorialise their statements. What was the most disgusting was the way these reporters with their cameramen chasing people coming out of Taj after hours of torturous confinement in the crossfire of the gun battle. They took pride in this. The scene of a man with an infant in arm shooing away Mediamen was shown repeatedly as something great. There were hundreds of people in hospitals. But there was hardly any coverage about them. All were glued to the scene of action where they could not understand the action and kept on spinning tales with their hair depth knowledge. The role of the print media was not great, but the fact is that the threat potential of print media is much less as compared the visual media.
This all reminds me of the Tricks Journalists play, a book by Dennis Barker and the title is the Dirty game the channels played!!!.

Tale of Haunting Terror (This is an impression piece Nayeem Quadri, Gujarat Editor of Petrowatch has written for the Media Newsletter. Nayeem was in Mumbai, the day incident happened and moved round the scene of action for two days. Naeem has returned to Gujarat after six years in UK ) It was about 9.30 on Wednesday evening. We (former ET colleague and friend Sunil Raghu, now with Dow Jones, in Mumbai and Petrowatch Senior Editor Madhu Nainan) were at Hotel Highland on L J Road in Mahim. Relishing the succulent "Bombay Duck", (it is not a duck but a very delicious variety of fish unique to Mumbai), we were witnessing India mauling England in the Cuttack ODI. Suddenly the manager rushed and the big Plazma TV screen had scenes of injured person being put into a van. People on the next table were quick and loud to dismiss this as the re-emergence of the gang war. It was only after reaching my room in the hotel, I realised what it was. It was Leopold one of the most hip and happening place at Colaba. Thick rivulets of blood had started flowing as if somebody had smashed a thousand ketchup bottles. The whole place was riddled with bullets. There were reports of firing at CST and the Taj. I could now understand that something "spectacularly" (that is the word one of the journalist friend used) big was unfolding. Throughout the night I sat glued in front of the TV set fully wide awake. Next day we headed for the CST (the Chattrapati Shivaji Terminus) by the Harbour Line. CST which was the scene of some gory mayhem on Wednesday had an eerie silence. Locals were chugging in and cops were seen around in sporadic numbers. I had the feeling of the terrorists lurking from behind every pillar. Coming out of the CST on the Dadabhoy Navrojee Road, the sheer size of the road bereft of any human or vehicular populace was awesome. After a quick grub at the press club, we reached the site of Taj alongwith some photographer friends. As we neared the iconic hotel, there were cars and two wheelers parked everywhere. People from far and wide had come to witness the action. There were journalists of all hue. OB vans on both sides of the road with their bonnets wide open and the generators whirring away presented a strange spectacle. Almost the who's who of the Indian television world was out there. Photographers armed with huge lenses resembling inverted "Kutub Minars" were busy clicking away from all possible angles. The Mumbaikar had his mobile for the purpose. The whole crowd of the media and the citizens was stationed near the Gateway of India. This huge stone structure presented a poignant sight. Almost same was the scene at the Oberoi. From here we went to the Narimanm House. It was getting dark. We clambered on to the terrace of a building just 50 metres away. On the terrace were the sharp shooters of the army. We mingled in the crowd of photographers busy clicking pictures. By the time I reached my hotel room past midnight, I was completely shattered by what I saw. Lying on the bed, I felt as if somebody was looking at me through big glass windows. I felt the baby faced terrorist dressed in a black T shirt taking an aim at me with his AK-47. To save myself from these bullets I pulled "razai" over my head. As I was getting comfortable with my head in the "razai" I was rudely jolted by a loud knocking on the door. I felt that the terrorist had changed his position from the window to the door. Mustering all the strength I had, I shouted out gingerly, "Kaun hain?" "Darwaza kholo. Police hain." (Open the door. This is the police), came the reply. It was 3.30 am. I had no option but to open the door. Around eight cops stormed in and began shooting questions, "Kahaan se aaye", "Kab aaye", "Mumbai mein kyun aaye." Even as I was answering all the questions, the other cops went through my bag, emptied all the belongings, went through the laptop, the mobile phone and looked below the bed, the mattress, the pillows, behind the cupboard. After checking my identity, the cop who questioned me signalled others to move out. He said sorry sir. Aaap ko to pata hoga kya huwa hain. Yeh check karna hamara duty hain." Sleep was definitely ruled out. I just sat on the sofa waiting for the dawn.

Sakal Times Lays off 70 employee in Delhi
Much publicized nationwide expansion plan of Pune based Sakal Times is being wrapped up even before the launch. On Sunday, the staff of the Delhi office found a notice on the closed door of Delhi office. It said "The editorial work carried out at Delhi is no longer required to be continued." The Delhi Bureau was launched on May 7, just six month back. It was clear earlier this month trouble was coming. But when it came, it was a great shock for the staff. They issued a statement saying that their anger was not so much about the shut down but about the way it was done. "Their belongings are inside, they have no idea about salary and compensation, and of course jobs to look for in an industry no longer booming. Senior Pune management have switched off their phones. The lock-out is illegal as they have not followed labour laws. The journalists have formed an action committee that plans to move court. The nearly 50 journalists are angry and aghast at such despicable treatment. This is an insult to journalists all over India who should rise to the occasion and send their condemnation to Sakal Papers Ltd," the statement said.
