Editor.....Jurnos joining PR
Reporters and other media persons joining PR industry is not a new thing. But there is a growing trend of journalists joining PR firms. Two decades earlier it was not considered ethical to have relations with PR world. However, as newspaper has become product, the sharp dividing line between media and PR has almost vanished. The trend is worldwide and so we Indians are following it with a sense of pride. Over the years the term advertorial has become a respectable word in the market driven media. In such a situation, journalists find the PR field as respectable. Some, who see the power of PR world acting in the media closely, must be finding a kick in making media dance to the tunes of PR industry. There are occasions when PR firms make reporters hang around Page Three characters something which is very humiliating for any journalist with self respect. No doubt, a reporter can join PR as a matter of his personal choice but the vanishing line dividing journalists and PR is something we must check. Otherwise, there is no difference between a reporter and a clerk. This issue has an article giving the idea of the trend of journalists joining PR besides a piece on confrontation between media and Punjab police second incident within a fortnight. And all other stuff which has become part of the newsletter.
Have A Happy Reading.
With love
Yogesh Sharma

New look Nano Modi
This Wednesday Chief Minister Narendra Modi invited journalists of Ahmedabad for annual lunch of the New Year. Let me tell you friends, Gujarat has probably the biggest new year celebration in the country and its New Year starts on the day after Diwali. In white Safari Modi had a very vibrant look. He moved round shaking hands and exchanging pleasentaries with journalists of all hues in a manner which was quite striking. On the dias, there was none except Party President Purshottam Rupala. At the lunch table , there was addition of Government spokesperson Jai Narayan Vyas, Finance Minister Vajubhai Vala and Urban Development Minister Nitin Patel. All others were seen moving round , many of them without anyone around them as the event was Modicentric. Some ministers regarded close to Modi were seen moving alone with their plates. A senior journalist close to Modi said that Modi had already decided who would sit with him on lunch table. One journalist remarked that it was Nano effect .
Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas is also spokesperson of Gujarat government. The man of versatile personality has a challenging job of handling odd questions from media of all hue. Vyasji is doing it successfully with his oratorial skills and considers every successful media interaction as a new feather in his cap. Chief Minister's luncheon meeting with media had a new kind of challenge. Chief Minister made a major annpuncement about the health Department's scheme to increase health facility at the Civil Hospital. There was nothing unusual in it as all the power vests in the CM. But, none asked him about the most talked about issue of incentives to Tata for the Nano car project. Soon after the CM's annoncement journalists gathered and asked Vyasji about incentives to Tata for Nano, something not in his portfolio.

Senior Journalists join PR firms
Finally, Gujarati Journalism has witnessed migration of its talent to fast growing Public Relations sector. Ajay Naik, a veteran journalist having more than 20 years of experience in Gujarati journalism recently joined NeuCom consulting (a subsidiary of Vaishnavi Corporate Communications-Tata Group fame) as Associate partner with very handsome salary. Naik a very brilliant news manager had started his full fledged career with Times of India (Gujarati Edition). He moved to Gujarat Samachar after closure of TOI-G edition in May 1993. Having spent almost 8 years in GS and strengthening its front page, he moved to Divya Bhaskar in February 2003. In fact, Ajay Naik was part of core team which recruited the entire DB Editorial set up across Gujarat. Probably Naik is the only person in Gujarati Journalism who knows most of the stringers/journalists in each district of the state. In February, 2008 he moved to Business Standard-Gujarati edition and finally after closure of BS-G he opted for PR. Last week also saw one more talent moving from Journalism and joining PR. He is Pranay Panchal who has joined Vaishnavi Corporate Communications. Pranay has 9 years of experience in Gujarati journalism. Migration from Journalism to PR is not new. Earlier, Ike Samuel had migrated from The Indian Express (he had spent 15 years in journalism) to Reliance Industries Ltd. At present Ike is with ADAG and DGM with Reliance Communications. He also recently completed 11 years in PR. Rajiv Saxena who was with the Indian Express for more than two decades is now a vice president of Corporate Communication Department of a Delhi based national firm. His post was of RE when he quit IE. Vipul Shukla is one more example of talent migration. After spending 6 years in active journalism he went to Reliance Industries Ltd to set up Corporate Communications Dept and after nearly completing 3 years in RIL he left and set up his own agency Vital Relations in Sep, 1999. Now, his agency is on the verge of successfully completing a decade. Earlier this year, Kalpesh Dudhia, photo coordinator of the TOI joined Reliance Industries of Mukesh Ambani as Sr Manager.Shekhar Rawal who started his career with Janmbhoomi in Mumbai joined TOI in Ahmedabad and moved to Blue Chip and now he is in the PR industry. Kashyap Joshipura had his initial grooming with Gujarat Samachar in Ahmedabad before joining the ONGC as PRO. He is one of the best PRO as he knows ONGC inside out. |

Punjab Journalists up in arms against Punjab police
Punjab media is once again target of the ire of Punjab police. This is the second incident within a fortnight. News X TV channel crew including Bureau Chief Shamsher Chandel has been criminally intimidated and assaulted by the staff of Inspector General ( Human Rights) Mohammad Mustafa and Congress MLA from Malerkotla Ms Razia Sultana at the residence of Razia in Malerkotla on Saturday.
What is shocking that the incident has come at a time when in a similar incident Punjab Chief Minister had announced setting up of a committee to look into complaints by and against journalists. Arrest of NDTV journalist by Kapurthala police and subsequent strong protests by journalists of Punjab had led to the announcement.
The special committee formed by Chandigarh Press Club in the present cases sought immediate registration of criminal cases against the IG and his staff followed by a high level probe which should be done by a special investigating team. Club President Sarabjit Pandher says that the fact that in spite of repeated assurances by none other than the Chief Minister, Sardar Prakash Singh Badal himself, the series of attacks on journalists continue unabated in the state.
In this case, News X team had sought prior appointment and when they reached at the pre fixed place, the police boss refused to meet and when the team reminded him of the appointment his gunmen physically assaulted them, says Shamsher Chandel.

Major shake up Divya Bhaskar to beat Gujarat Samachar With Ajay Umath taking over as the State Editor of all editions of Divya Bhaskar in Gujarat earlier this month, a series of changes have been brought about in senior positions in editorial side in Gujarat. Krishnakant Unatkad has been moved to Divya Bhaskar Baroda from Surat as its Executive Editor. He has been brought here because he was instrumental in the launch of the Baroda edition of Gujarat Samachar, the main rival of Bhaskar in Gujarat. His place in Surat is filled by Manoj Bhinmal who has been shifted to Surat from Udaipur. Devendra Tarkash from Gandhidham is brought to Ahmedabad as Deputy Editor. Vipul Gupta from Bhopal is in Ahmedabad as DE to cater to rural market. Bidhan Parikh from Indore to Ahmedabad for four page city edition of Bhaskar is another change. All these changes are focused at increasing the readership of Divya Bhaskar in rural areas as the latest findings of the Indian Readership Survey reveal that DB is lagging behind Gujarat Samachar in rural readership by a margin of about seven percent. Ajay Umath has set his target to bring DB in SEC 1 zone where readership has the best ROI. |
