Friends, here is the latest issue of the newsletter after an unannounced break. I was vacationing during this time. However, I wanted to bring out the newsletter even during chhutti time having full faith in the technology powered media of anywhere anytime. But my favourite Law of Inertia prevailed and I decided not to bring out the issue! I was in Delhi and could not resist my temptation of having an evening in the Press Club in its open area socializing with some friends with social drinking session. I also enjoyed a brief stay in Gujarat Bhavan in my favourite room 113. It was just to have the feel of the place where I had very hectic schedule during pre Assembly poll period last year. I had conducted an experiment that state media should cover state related events in Delhi. The experiment was successful in many ways. I really had an edge over gurus covering political affairs in Delhi just because I knew almost all Gujarat politicians from Gujarat while the knowledge of the Gurus was limited to some Gujarat ministers, some MPs and presidents of the state units of the parties. The experiment had paid off very well. My Gujarat centric news portal www.gujaratglobal.com was the first to release the list of Congress candidates of constituencies of first phase. While the list on my site was at 11 am, it was officially released at 1 am, almost 14 hours later. Now when English and other language newspapers are going multi edition( media version of MNC !), there is need for very strong local element in news coverage to avoid blunders in the reporting of issues of local interest from Delhi. And it is also to avoid a situation where a junior reporter in Delhi asks a senior reporter of his newspaper in the state "what's happening in your state" with a tone that has notes of arrogance and patronizing attitude. Friends, the newsletter has some Delhi flavour and other regular features.
Have A Happy Reading.
With love Yogesh Sharma

Media Masala
Parting sting of White Cobra
Kishore Anjaria, journalist turned PR man is retiring this month. He has sent a thank you note to all friends and acquaintances in the media. His letter reminds one of his pen name White Cobra. Anjaria who is always dressed in white continued to write even after joining the government and one of pen name was white cobra. Our journalist friends remember for the vehicle had kept exclusively for journalists' entertainment. In mega size it was written on the vehicle VIP Journalists. It was telling the world who was among the journalists taking free ride. After 2002 riots, he started writing word OM in the tender notices of the Board. Modi had a tough time when Advani drew his attention to the Hindu pattern of tenders and K Kailashnathan, the then secretary Water Supply had really a difficult time to defend his blued eyed PR man in white. In the letter Anjaria has thanked all for their cooperation during 22 years of his service and talked about the recommendation letters senior IAS officers gave him for his work in the Gujarat Water Supply & Sewerage Board. He had saved Rs eight crore through his prudent policies. Anjaria was transferred to the remote tribal district Dangs when V S Gadhvi took over the Board. It was certainly a punishment transfer for Anjaria who is Joint Director Publicity, the only officer on the post. And since then he is on leave. He had accumulated leave of 500 days enough to be on leave till retirement, he says. In his thanks letter, he has pointed out that he had become victim of vindictive attitude of some vested interests. The way I have been treated will honest people think twice before doing good work. He ends his letter referring to the Chief Minister Narendra Modi. He says Modi holds chintan shivirs and asks government staff to be public oriented. Still such things happen even in his government! Anjaria, a bachelor, has decided to work with some publication to be active in the retired life. Certainly with Cobra sting!!!!

Survival tips for Gujarat Bhavan
-Yogesh Sharma
In a way, this is the second part of my article which I had written on my blog zero column on December 4 (http://zerocolumn.blogspot.com/2007/12/blog-post_04.html). This time I found that Gujarat Bhavan was different in many ways. A comfortable stay has become a little more difficult. Though, my friend Nilesh Shukla of the Information Department and Ranjit, manager of the Bhavan, were nice to get me my favourite room, other things like a cup of tea after 7 pm were really a very difficult task for them. For Mediamen, state guest houses are not just a place of cheap accommodation. For any good journalist, these are the sources of information and so survival tips are necessary. Friends, rates of food have increased here. So be ready to pay more. But do not insist on quality. There is no express statement about relation between the two, rate and quality. The menu shows Jalebi, Fafda and several other Gujarati varieties. Do not ask for them. They exist in breakfast menu only. If you think that you will have breakfast for a fixed charge, forget it. It is now a matter of past. Each item is rated separately. So your bill can inflate several times. My friend, Gujarat Tourism Minister Jay Narayan Vyas, wants to promote Gujarat as a state committed to prohibition and vegetarianism. However, the newly appointed contractor of the Gujarat Bhavan, seems to be one step ahead. Now, even onion is not served in Salad! But you can get uttapam with onion !! This contradiction can be taken as conundrum of life and left for others to ponder. Gujarati Thali cost Rs 35 now, Rs ten more. You may not mind paying extra Rs 10. But do not ask for the quality of the food. Thanks god, the contractor is giving you something to fill your belly for just Rs 35. Chhas of Gujarat, a diluted version of Punjabi lassi , is now not free supplement with the food. About 200 ML costs Rs. Five. People of Gujarat, particularly of Saurashtra and Kutch region and those who love chhas resist their temptation. Otherwise bill of chhas can be more than food. The ambience of the dinning hall is much more Gujarati. There are photographs of Pramukh swami, head of a sub sect of Swaminarayan sect in the hall prominently displayed. There are two photographs relating to Gujarat culture. But they are to be searched to be seen. Friends keep your journalistic inquisitiveness aside. Do not think of the GR which allows display of such photographs in a state owned building. It is possible that the contractor, a follower of the sub sect, might have interpreted the contract terms as terms to operate in his"territory". Something like BOT or BOOT model of work. Time zones of breakfast, lunch and dinner are sharply divided. No overlapping. No breakfast after 10.30. Contractor may extend the time at his will. The consideration of extension is not the status of the guest, but the disposal of the breakfast. Tea is available between 7 am and 7 pm only. If you want it in your room, keep cash ready. There is no account of the room. Everything is in cash. Now tea costs Rs eight a cup and coffee Rs ten which was earlier Rs five and seven respectively. Either you give exact amount or wait for the bearer to bring the change. Earlier people used to give tip as per attended now they may have to adopt the per service model. Mentally you must be ready to face the awkward situation of paying money in front of your guest. Do it with a smile to conceal embarrassment. You can use phrases like all this is sarkari to face the unwanted situation of shelling out money every time you have tea in your room. Despite a conscious restrain on journalistic inquisitiveness, I wondered how much money the contractor must be making from tea, coffee and chhas. I asked one of the staff about catering to the Chief Minister and his staff since they have quite unearthly time schedules. Quick came the reply, there is a separate VIP arrangement for them. But my friend CM is Chief Minister and all other CM are common man!! But friend, every problem has solution. Here is a way out. If you are reaching Gujarat Bhavan after 9 pm, have your stuff outside or bring packed food. Onions are not officially banned; I have confirmed it for friends. Always keep a thermos flask. All sizes are available in the market. Fill it and enjoy discussions over series of cups of tea anytime. I must say that the towel and soap problem is over. Now, you get these things in your room and they are changed daily. Other conditions are not much improved, but flutter of activities of housekeeping staff assures you that the repair work is being undertaken. Ultimately, it is the state guest house and no one should hazard any guess.

MEDIA BARONS EAT THE WHOLE CAKE
Tulsi Dutta (Tulsi Dutta teaches journalism in Calcutta University. He is also a visiting faculty in some other institutions in Kolkatta. Unlike many teachers in mass media institutions, Tulsi Dutta is with rich practical experience of media . He has worked on the desk in different positions in Indian Express and Bartmaan before turning to academics in 1995.)
The study of Mass Communication is rapidly catching on with the young men and women. The lure of public glare and glamour apart, this discipline of education really holds out hordes of hopes to the hopefuls in India where media business is thriving like no other business. The sole exception, of course, being the Information Technology (IT) sector. But one basic difference separates the two money-spinners. While the IT sector shares its boom with its employees, the media business simply gobbles up everything depriving journalists and other employees.
As Mr Chalapathi Rao, one of the very few editors in the truest sense of the term, had once said: As the Press has grown, there are now a newspaper industry and the profession of journalism. They are separate but intimately connected, for without the industry the profession cannot exist. In this respect, the profession of journalism is not like legal or medical profession. The organized part of journalismis not self-employed, it is largely employed.
The question is, where is the scope of employment for the young men and women armed with degree and diploma in journalism and mass communication ? How many media houses regularly advertise to recruit journalists ? Some newspapers stoutly refuse to take the students as interns.
Because of the intrinsic nature of the media business ( especially newspapers), its owners can easily bend the rules of the land through a few "critical" editorials for their vested interest like getting government land in prime localities at throwaway price or getting the fines imposed by the municipal corporation for illegal construction totally waives through the "good offices" of some obliging officers. An editor-owner of a Bengali newspaper in Calcutta went to the extent of "hiring" the top boss of the state forest department to prepare a garden in his palatial office. This species of editor-owners convert the reporters into "operators". They are kept in the "stable" and paid handsomely not for any journalistic excellence (for they hardly need to work), but for their expertise to solve their masters' problem.
These so-called editors are encouraged by the simple fact that those who are recruited as reporters are meticulously chosen from among hundreds of "wannabe journos" on the basis of "docility factor". One editor-owner tells his recruiter to find out the vulnerable candidates' especially who hail from rural areas but want to make big in the metropolitan city. These candidates are chosen because the editor knows that they can be easily bullied or simply coerced to perform the kind of duties that normally a city-bred candidate would not do. These new recruits are offered the job. Salary ? Well, Rs. 3000 ! Less than the daily cost of the "aromatic massage" the newspaper owner-editor may probably take.
How things happen? A newspaper is fined for violating municipal laws. The amount is quite substantial. Now the editor will, through his operators "sound" the reporter of the corporation beat to do the needful. I know one such hapless reporter who hailed from a distant district town. He tried for a couple of weeks to dodge the editor's directive to get the matter settled in favour of the editor. But he had to give in at the end. By that time that reporter had already booked a flat in the new township. The editor played his trump card. He threatened the reporter to transfer him to a district. The fine was waived and the reporter who came from a district settle down in Calcutta fulfilled his dream.
The first report of the Press Council which was constituted under an Act of Parliament in 1965 is there to see how unabashedly big industry houses started newspapers to share the spoils of the World War II. That the same tradition is continuing is for all to see. Today's newspapers "beosaiis" (owners) are much more cunning than their counterparts three decades ago. These "beosaiis" pretty well know how to create hype around a person to make sure that he or she does whatever he or she is told to do. The modus oparandi is very simple. He deputes a reporter (read operator) and assigns him a specific job. The reporter will glued to the target. Like the cell phone ad, the reporter will go wherever the target goes. Travelling with him or her through the length and breadth of the state, the country and beyond. That reporter may also have to "gift" the target high-end cell phone or very expensive sari as the case may be on behalf of his master. This is what the freedom of the press is all about. This is how corruption spreads. The thumb rule being "you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours".
