Editor.....recap and road map

Friends you know that the media newsletter has come into the two digit phase. Now there are 1712 (Yes, one thousand twelve only) subscribers of the media newsletter. Almost all are connected with media in one way or other. The actual number of the readers is much higher because many are forwarding the newsletter to their friends.

Now I have decided to showcase some of the popular articles of the newsletter. It is to reach those who missed these articles. Though the newsletter has archive, I know that there are many who are very much committed to the Newton's First Law like me. It is also known as Law of Inertia. My friends I simply want to say lazy persons like me!!!!! Law of Inertia simply means we do not want to change on our own, we need some external force.

Friends I have planned another Newsletter which I wish to introduce from the next month. This weekly Newsletter will be purely a newsletter having good stories from Gujarat. I am sure that you will like it. It may not be as involved and as spicy as the media newsletter. But it will be certainly quite interesting.

Earlier, I introduced blogosphere, where I write about a journalists' blog. This week I received a mail from Hemendra Narayan, Special Correspondent, Statesman, Delhi. This gave me the idea that I should tell friends about books written by journalists. I am going to start this column from the next week.

To talk about history is to recap and to talk about the future is road map.

Words change with time. But their meaning remain the same. In 70's when I joined computer course, first day I learnt a word FLOWCHART. It simply meant steps to do something!!!! But we have fancy for new words and we coin them.

In this issue there are popular articles. You can read them. And we have regular stuff about our friends.

Have A Happy Reading.

With love Yogesh Sharma

Story de de baba, story de de baba

For newsmen story is the main thing. Our friends can go to any extent to get the story. Sudhir Nanvati had never realised the story pressure of media on him when he agreed to conduct an Inquiry into Harbhajan slapping episode.

As the new spread, he started receiving calls. When he went to Mumbai he encountered number of journalists who wanted story. Some told him that they were junior and so he should give them story to help them make better show before the boss!!!

Nanavati met a young lady journalist. She was quick to tell Nanavati that she was related to him and so he should give her a story. She found out a distant relation thread with Nanvati to establish relationship.

However, 61 year old lawyer Nanvati could maintain his cool while dealing with unexpected flurry of activity of media around him. This is one of the exclusives he shared with Ahmedabad media when he participated in the Meet the Press programme of the Gujarat Media Club!!!!

Initially Nanavati claimed that he had very good experience with media. However, as the interaction with media progressed and he unfolded himself it was clear that he had his quota of experience of media turning and twisting facts to make a story. At times even without facts. And so De de baba story de de nahee to banaa doonga!!!!! द ेदे बाबा स्टोरी द ेद ेनही तो स्टोरी बना दूंगा

What others say

Dear Mr. Sharma. Just wanted to tell you that I find your newsletters quite interesting. Sitting in Delhi, one rarely gets to know what is happening in our profession in other parts of the country. I am not referring particularly to this newsletter, but about issues in general and developments that are taking place in the regional media world. My best wishes to you.

Yogeshbhai,

My felicitations on publication of the 10th issue of Media News Letter. I have been avid reader of it. I must say that you are doing what our journalist unions should have been doing, instead of collecting membership fees and doing nothing to the real benefit of the journalists! Yes, the guys who are managing notebooks for journalist's kids are doing a great job. This is small but a great help. Itna bhi kaun karta hai? (May god fill their houses with notebooks and banknotes.) In the latest issue of the newsletter, a mention of media books and "dens of dons-fate of press rooms" piece reminded me of a very controversial and thought provoking book by French journalist Serge Halimi "Les Nouveaux Chien de Garde". (New Watchdogs) French people have penchant for self-reference, hence they have media critiques in a very obscure language.

The writer Harshvardhan Trivedi has worked in UK for four years was in France for some months. Presently he is with UNI Ahmedabad. He has written an article on  french Journalist Serge Halimi which will appear soon in the Newsletter.

Dear Yogeshji...

Dear Yogeshbhai,

Thanks for the newsletter.

"Press Rooms: Dens of Dons" was a very interesting reading. Some of my friends who had a stint in London also echoes the same. According to them, Indian High comissioner office in London is like our local Information Dep't office for the journalists.

Gujarat Media Club organises "Meet The Press" with Sudhir Nanvati

GMC had organised the event with Sudhir Nanavati today (Thursday) evening. Nanavati had exclusive meeting with journalists in the sense that he shared his experience and views with media of his own city Ahmedabad. He talked about the pressure of media to get story, how media wrote things which never happened and phone calls and SMS about the Harbhajan slapping episode.

Certainly, it was a good bargain for journalists.

The function of the press in society is to inform, but its role in society is to make money."
