Phylloxera are grapevine lice that feed on the roots and leaves of grapevines.  In 1860, an Englishman inadvertently introduced phylloxera in France by planting non-native vines from America (our native grapes are resistant to phylloxera, but wines made from those grapes are resistant to drinking).

By 1890 some 66-90% of the vineyards in Europe were destroyed by phylloxera. The small percentage of vineyards that were unaffected are called pre-phylloxera and the wines made from these vineyards are prized all over the world for their immense character and historical significance.

Marchesi Alfieri San Germano Monferrato 2005 is 100% Pinot Noir that is made from four rows of vines that were planted in 1835 and avoided the phylloxera plague.  They are also the first Pinot Noir vines to have been brought from Burgundy and planted in Piedmont, Italy.  The wine is a profound Pinot Noir with dense concentration and long aging potential.  We look forward to tasting this wine soon, but wanted to get the word out now as it would be a great gift to any Pinot lover you may know.
